Below are the top eight football managers who gave their sons their debut in competitive games:
1. Robin and Shaqueel van Persie
Naija News reports that Robin van Persie gave his son Shaqueel a senior debut in Feyenoord’s Europa League defeat to Celtic on Thursday, November 27. The 19-year-old striker had previously spent two seasons at Manchester City’s academy before joining Feyenoord in 2017, signing his first professional contract in 2022. Shaqueel made his first-team debut on Sunday in the Eredivisie against NEC Nijmegen, followed by his Europa League appearance four days later.
2. Johan and Jordi Cruyff
Johan Cruyff, a legend at Ajax and Barcelona, gave his son Jordi opportunities at Barcelona while managing the club.
Jordi played 54 games under his father, also enjoying stints at Manchester United and earning nine caps for Spain. Reflecting on the experience, Jordi told BBC Radio 5 Live in 2019, “He was demanding of me in front of others, absolutely. He would give me a shout and the hairs would stand up.”
3. Harry and Jamie Redknapp
Jamie Redknapp had the rare experience of playing under his father, Harry, both at the start and end of his career. Beginning at Bournemouth at the age of 16, Jamie later joined Liverpool in 1991, and returned to play under Harry at Southampton in 2005 before retiring due to injury. Harry also managed his nephew, Frank Lampard, during his time at West Ham.
4. Steve and Alex Bruce
Alex Bruce spent more time under the management of his father, Steve, than any other coach. The pair worked together at Birmingham in 2005-2006 and later at Hull City. Alex also joined his father’s coaching staff at West Brom.
5. Zinedine and Enzo & Luca Zidane
Zinedine Zidane handed senior appearances to both Enzo and Luca Zidane during his tenure at Real. Enzo scored in a Copa del Rey match, while Luca featured in two La Liga games. Both players had departed the club before Zinedine’s second spell ended in 2021.
6. Alex and Darren Ferguson
Darren Ferguson progressed through Manchester United’s youth ranks and was given his senior debut by Sir Alex Ferguson in 1990.
Darren made 29 appearances for the club before leaving for Wolves in 1994, after being part of the squad that won the 1992-93 Premier League title.
7. Diego and Giuliano Simeone
Giuliano Simeone has spent much of his career playing under his father Diego at Atletico Madrid, alongside loan spells at Zaragoza and Alaves. He made his La Liga debut in April 2022, coming on as a 91st-minute substitute against Granada.
8. Danny and Daley Blind
Daley Blind, a versatile defender known for his spells at Ajax and Manchester United, played under his father, Danny, when the elder Blind managed the Netherlands national team from 2015 to 2017.

Maresca’s men took the lead through Joao Pedro, before the Serie A side fought back to take all three points.
Gianluca Scamacca’s header levelled the game, before Charles De Ketelaere smashed in the winner in the 83rd minute.
“After we conceded the first goal, we lost control a little bit of the game,” Maresca told TNT Sports.
“We are playing every two days, two days, two days. For a moment we looked like we struggled a bit.
“We were aggressive like them. We had different chances to make it 2-0 and when we conceded 1-1 the dynamic of the game changed a little bit.”
Chelsea now have 10 points from six games, two points behind eighth-placed Liverpool.
