“We woke up this morning and we just felt we had the feeling to come down here,” he says, adding that he knew many of the people caught up in the attack.

He said they wanted to hold a menorah lighting ceremony not just to mark Hanukkah, but also to “remember them in the way [the victims] would like to be remembered, which was by adding in light and adding in goodness and kindness”.

Asked about how the community was reacting, he says: “I think it’s fair to say that we are all shocked, and we pray that those are on power, do the appropriate things to ensure that justice is sought, and that everyone is free in Australia to practice their religion, and go about their life in a free way.”

If you’re just joining our live coverage of the aftermath of the shooting at Bondi Beach, here’s what you need to know:

Fifteen people were killed in an attack by two gunmen on Sunday, including a 10-year-old girl. More than 40 have been taken to hospital, as people in Sydney are urged to donate blood
Here’s a minute-by-minute breakdown of how the shooting unfolded
Authorities on Monday revealed more details about the shooters, who were father and son. The 50-year-old father, who was shot dead by police, had arrived in Australia in 1998 on a student visa. His 24-year-old son, who’s in hospital, is an Australian-born citizen
Police raided the family gunmen’s home last night. One of their former neighbours told the BBC that when she saw the news of the shooting, “I thought oh my goodness, it can’t be them”
Albanese described the shooting as “an act of pure evil” and pledged to discuss tougher gun laws in parliament. For context, here’s a look at Australia’s gun laws
Officials are hailing bystanders who had saved the lives of others during the attack, as well as the off-duty police officers who flocked to Bondi to help out when news of the shooting broke

We’ll continue to bring you the latest updates as we get them. Stay with us.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon is speaking in Sydney and says he has visited the families and police officers who were injured in the attack, praising them for their bravery. At least two officers were injured.

“There are many, many stories of bravery from members of the community as well,” he adds. “Really want to acknowledge the work that was done yesterday. We know that a number of people are alive now because the actions of innocent bystanders.”

Officials – including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese – have just wrapped-up a news conference in Sydney which lasted just under 30 minutes.

Let’s quickly recap some of the key developments:

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns confirms 15 people, including a child, have been killed and one of the shooters has also died
Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon says the two gunmen were a 50-year-old father and his 24-year-old son

Police say the 50-year-old man was a licenced firearms holder, had six firearms registered to him and that six firearms were found on Bondi Beach
“Two active improved devices” were found at the scene and have since been rendered safe by police
Two properties have been searched by officers overnight in the western Sydney suburbs of Campsie and Bonnyrigg

Police also say 328 officers have been deployed to provide extra security and support to the Jewish community in Sydney
Albanese has pledged to dedicate every single resource required in order to respond to the attack and also vowed to “stamp out” and “eradicate antisemitism” in Australian society

Some images are coming to us from the western outskirts of Sydney – about 40km away from Bondi Beach – showing a heavy police presence.

Multiple Australian outlets – including ABC and 7News – are reporting that armed police have swarmed a property at Bonnyrigg which is believed to be the home of one of the Bondi Beach gunmen.

This is yet to be confirmed by official police accounts and the BBC could not independently verify these reports.

A nearby restaurant worker has described the moment he heard multiple shots go off in Bondi Beach.

“I knew it was gunshots immediately,” William Doliente Petty tells Reuters news agency.

The 18-year-old says he saw people start running but didn’t realise the severity of the event at first. Shortly after, he says, all of the customers at the restaurant stood up and began to run towards the back exit.

“Everyone was pushing everyone. There was no semblance, and we just ran in through.”

Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon says there will be a “significant investigation” led by counter-terrorism. “No stone will be left unturned,” he adds.

He says that the second offender behind the attack is in “a serious condition in hospital”. We previously heard that the other attacker is deceased.

A statement now from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who describes the scenes in Bondi as “shocking and distressing”.

He says he has spoken to the Australian Federal Police commissioner and the New South Wales (NSW) Premier.

“We are working with NSW police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed,” he says.

“Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives,” he adds.

Keir Starmer Slams Trump’s NATO Remarks as “Insulting and Appalling”

Published

on

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has strongly criticized remarks by US President Donald Trump that appeared to dismiss the contributions and sacrifices of NATO allies during the Afghanistan war. Speaking to Fox News in Davos, Trump suggested NATO troops “stayed a little back, a little off the front lines” and claimed the US “never needed” its allies. Starmer described the comments as “insulting and frankly appalling,” emphasizing the courage and sacrifice of British and allied troops. Prince Harry and former US diplomat Nicholas Burns also condemned Trump’s statements, which have sparked widespread backlash among European leaders.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING

Key Points:

The remarks risk straining transatlantic relations and undermining the solidarity of the NATO alliance, especially ahead of future security collaborations.
They disrespect the documented sacrifices of thousands of NATO troops from multiple countries who served, were injured, or died in Afghanistan.
The backlash reflects broader European concerns about the reliability and diplomatic approach of US leadership under Trump’s administration.
Such statements may influence public and political perceptions of the US commitment to multilateral defense partnerships.
The timing, amid ongoing global security challenges, highlights tensions in how military contributions and alliances are acknowledged and valued.

The controversy is likely to fuel diplomatic discussions on alliance solidarity and the public recognition of collective military sacrifices.

North Korea Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un pictured grinning in ‘North Korean Benidorm’ as he enters women’s pool

North Korean despot Kim Jong-un has been seen grinning as he peers over a women’s spa pool bizarre new photographs.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING

The Supreme Leader turned up at the official opening of the Onpo Workers’ Recreation Centre in North Hamgyong Province yesterday afternoon – a newly-reopened resort previously described as the ‘North Korean Benidorm’. After a ribbon cutting ceremony, Kim kept his large winter coat on for all the photos, even when he was inside the warm spa building – but appeared to be thrilled at what he was seeing.

The hot spring spa was entirely remodelled after coming in for harsh criticism from Kim Jong-un back in 2018, when he singled it out for poor management and ‘shabby’ facilities. Speaking at the opening ceremony yesterday, he said: “Every section is arranged practically and harmoniously, with all architectural elements designed to blend with the surrounding natural environment.

“I remember when I visited here a few years ago… and severely criticised the uncultured and unhygienic management practices… Seeing this holiday camp, now rebuilt as an excellent rest facility for the people, fills me with pride that we have accomplished another meaningful task.”

During an inspection of the site in 2018, Kim Jong-un strongly criticised operations, saying the site was “worse than a fish tank” and “really shabby”. After his most recent visit, he ordered resort officials to prepare to open, giving instructions that the site should be fully opened next month.

Spa trips are being offered to members of North Korea’s ruling class along with foreign tourists from China and sanctions-hit Russia, with prices ranging between $1,000 (£743) to $1,350 (£1,000) for a week-long tour, excluding flights.

Meet Veronika, the cow that went viral for scratching herself with sticks and stunned scientists

Veronika, a Swiss Brown cow, has challenged long-held assumptions about farm animals after researchers saw her using tools to scratch hard-to-reach parts of her body, a behaviour scientists say is rare.

For nearly a decade, Veronika, living on a farm in the small Austrian town of Notsch im Gailtal, has been observed picking up sticks with her mouth and skillfully using them to scratch her back and other parts of her body. When animal behaviour experts at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna recently reviewed videos of her actions, they realised they were witnessing something extraordinary, CNN reported.

The findings have been published in the journal Current Biology, marking what researchers say is the first documented case of tool use in a pet cow.

“What this tells us is that cows have the potential to innovate tool use, and we have ignored this fact for thousands of years,” lead author Antonio J Osuna-Mascaro, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Veterinary Medicine, wrote in an email to CNN. “There are around 1.5 billion heads of cattle in the world, and humans have lived with them for at least 10,000 years. It’s shocking that we’re only discovering this now.”

According to the research team, Veronika’s behaviour goes beyond accidental interaction with objects. “When we first saw the video, it was clear that the behaviour was intentional and not accidental,” Osuna-Mascaro said.

Further, researchers conducted controlled experiments by placing a deck brush in front of Veronika in different orientations to better understand her abilities. They observed how she used her tongue to pick up the brush, which end she chose, and which parts of her body she targeted, the report added.

The results showed that Veronika not only used tools deliberately but also demonstrated her ability to make decisions. She preferred the bristled end of the brush for rubbing thicker skin on her upper body, while using the blunt handle for more sensitive areas, such as her udder.

“This is extremely surprising because the only other solid example of multipurpose tool use that we know of belongs to the chimpanzees of the Congo Basin,” Osuna-Mascaro said in the email. “These, sometimes, are observed using a single tool with two different ends, and use one end to open a hole in the termite mounds, and the other end to fish for the termites.”

He added, “The spatial relations in Veronika’s case are simpler. Nevertheless, it’s astonishing to find that a cow has the capability to do something like this.”

Despite lacking hands or opposable thumbs, Veronika displayed impressive control using her mouth. Researchers noted that she adjusted her grip depending on which end of the brush she needed, the body part she was scratching, and the kind of motion required, the report stated.

The study suggests that the cognitive abilities of cattle, and possibly other farm animals, may be far more advanced than previously believed. Researchers hope the discovery will encourage further observation and study of livestock behaviour, potentially reshaping how humans understand and treat animals that have lived alongside them.
