“We woke up this morning and we just felt we had the feeling to come down here,” he says, adding that he knew many of the people caught up in the attack.
He said they wanted to hold a menorah lighting ceremony not just to mark Hanukkah, but also to “remember them in the way [the victims] would like to be remembered, which was by adding in light and adding in goodness and kindness”.
Asked about how the community was reacting, he says: “I think it’s fair to say that we are all shocked, and we pray that those are on power, do the appropriate things to ensure that justice is sought, and that everyone is free in Australia to practice their religion, and go about their life in a free way.”

If you’re just joining our live coverage of the aftermath of the shooting at Bondi Beach, here’s what you need to know:
Fifteen people were killed in an attack by two gunmen on Sunday, including a 10-year-old girl. More than 40 have been taken to hospital, as people in Sydney are urged to donate blood
Here’s a minute-by-minute breakdown of how the shooting unfolded
Authorities on Monday revealed more details about the shooters, who were father and son. The 50-year-old father, who was shot dead by police, had arrived in Australia in 1998 on a student visa. His 24-year-old son, who’s in hospital, is an Australian-born citizen
Police raided the family gunmen’s home last night. One of their former neighbours told the BBC that when she saw the news of the shooting, “I thought oh my goodness, it can’t be them”
Albanese described the shooting as “an act of pure evil” and pledged to discuss tougher gun laws in parliament. For context, here’s a look at Australia’s gun laws
Officials are hailing bystanders who had saved the lives of others during the attack, as well as the off-duty police officers who flocked to Bondi to help out when news of the shooting broke
We’ll continue to bring you the latest updates as we get them. Stay with us.
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon is speaking in Sydney and says he has visited the families and police officers who were injured in the attack, praising them for their bravery. At least two officers were injured.
“There are many, many stories of bravery from members of the community as well,” he adds. “Really want to acknowledge the work that was done yesterday. We know that a number of people are alive now because the actions of innocent bystanders.”

Officials – including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese – have just wrapped-up a news conference in Sydney which lasted just under 30 minutes.
Let’s quickly recap some of the key developments:
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns confirms 15 people, including a child, have been killed and one of the shooters has also died
Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon says the two gunmen were a 50-year-old father and his 24-year-old son
Police say the 50-year-old man was a licenced firearms holder, had six firearms registered to him and that six firearms were found on Bondi Beach
“Two active improved devices” were found at the scene and have since been rendered safe by police
Two properties have been searched by officers overnight in the western Sydney suburbs of Campsie and Bonnyrigg
Police also say 328 officers have been deployed to provide extra security and support to the Jewish community in Sydney
Albanese has pledged to dedicate every single resource required in order to respond to the attack and also vowed to “stamp out” and “eradicate antisemitism” in Australian society
Some images are coming to us from the western outskirts of Sydney – about 40km away from Bondi Beach – showing a heavy police presence.
Multiple Australian outlets – including ABC and 7News – are reporting that armed police have swarmed a property at Bonnyrigg which is believed to be the home of one of the Bondi Beach gunmen.
This is yet to be confirmed by official police accounts and the BBC could not independently verify these reports.

A nearby restaurant worker has described the moment he heard multiple shots go off in Bondi Beach.
“I knew it was gunshots immediately,” William Doliente Petty tells Reuters news agency.
The 18-year-old says he saw people start running but didn’t realise the severity of the event at first. Shortly after, he says, all of the customers at the restaurant stood up and began to run towards the back exit.
“Everyone was pushing everyone. There was no semblance, and we just ran in through.”
Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon says there will be a “significant investigation” led by counter-terrorism. “No stone will be left unturned,” he adds.
He says that the second offender behind the attack is in “a serious condition in hospital”. We previously heard that the other attacker is deceased.
A statement now from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who describes the scenes in Bondi as “shocking and distressing”.
He says he has spoken to the Australian Federal Police commissioner and the New South Wales (NSW) Premier.
“We are working with NSW police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed,” he says.
“Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives,” he adds.

BREAKING NEWS: Senate President Akpabio Currently Hospitalised In London After Collapse, Misses Key Budget Session – Sources
According to the sources, Akpabio “collapsed on the 10th of this month and was rushed to London in a private jet provided by billionaire businessman, Aliko Dangote.”....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, is currently ill and receiving medical treatment at a hospital in London, the United Kingdom, after reportedly collapsing earlier this month, top sources from the National Assembly have told SaharaReporters.
According to the sources, Akpabio “collapsed on the 10th of this month and was rushed to London in a private jet provided by billionaire businessman, Aliko Dangote.”
The sources added that this development has kept the Senate President away from official duties, including the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) interactive session held on Wednesday.
SaharaReporters was informed that Akpabio’s condition is serious enough to warrant continued overseas medical care.
A source disclosed that “this is the second time he is being rushed to London for treatment,” raising fresh concerns about his health and capacity to continue leading the upper legislative chamber.
Multiple senators are said to have travelled to London to check on him. One of the sources said, “A number of senators have gone to visit me,” in reference to Akpabio’s hospitalisation abroad.
The sources further revealed that medical experts attending to the Senate President have reportedly advised him to reduce his workload.
According to one of the briefings received by SaharaReporters, “Doctors are advising him to step down from the Senate to attend to his health.”
Akpabio’s absence was felt at the flag-off of the MTEF and FSP interactive session, a crucial engagement between the executive and the legislature that outlines Nigeria’s medium-term fiscal and economic plans.
SaharaReporters gathered that he “has already missed today’s Medium Term Expenditure Framework presentation today.”
In his stead, the Senate President was represented by Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi at the event, confirming Akpabio’s inability to attend the session in person.
Further indications of Akpabio’s condition emerged from aides monitoring developments around his return.
One source was quoted as saying, “One of the aides just told me now that they are going to pick the guy from the airport,” suggesting ongoing logistical arrangements around his movement.
Akpabio’s last public appearance appeared to be on December 9 when the Nigerian Senate formally approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to send Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin to support efforts to restore peace and stability following an attempted coup.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, had announced the approval during the plenary, after lawmakers deliberated the request in the Committee of the Whole under section 5, Part II of the Constitution.
The Senators voted unanimously in favour, granting legislative backing for the regional security intervention.
Akpabio had described the decision as a critical move, emphasising that unrest in a neighbouring country poses risks to the entire West African region.
“An injury to one is an injury to all,” Akpabio had said, stressing Nigeria’s duty to support its ECOWAS partners in maintaining regional stability.

BREAKING NEWS: Woman beheaded ex-husband and disposed of his head before marrying his son
WARNING: DISTRESSING CONTENT Devyn Michaels, 47, was found guilty of first-degree murder following a two-week trial in Las Vegas after her ex-husband Jonathan Willette’s headless body was discovered.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
Devyn Michaels was detained in 2023 after the discovery of her 46 year old husband Jonathan Willette’s body.
A jury has found a former adult film star guilty of murdering her ex-husband before going on to marry his son, following a lengthy court case.
Devyn Michaels, 47, was convicted of first-degree murder last month after a fortnight-long trial in which prosecutors and defence barristers presented vastly different versions of events to the 14-person jury.
Prosecutors John Giordani and Brittni Griffith contended that Michaels held a grudge against Willette after he won sole custody of their two children. Michaels’ defence team tried to suggest Willette’s son as a possible suspect, but failed to provide any corroborating evidence, with no CCTV footage or telephone records linking him to the scene.
Michaels was detained in 2023 after the discovery of her 46 year old husband Jonathan Willette’s decapitated body, which showed severe injuries from chemical burns, at his Las Vegas home on 6 August 2023. Detectives suspected Michaels had dumped Willette’s head in a rubbish bin in her northwest valley neighbourhood, reports The Mirror.
Whilst showing disturbing crime scene images to jurors, including photographs of Willette’s headless body, Giordani cautioned, “And all I can say is, ‘Buckle up, because you’re in for a wild ride.”, reports the Express US.
Griffith further argued that Willette was planning to move away with Michaels and his son, but she wanted her ex-husband out of the picture. “And the truth is, the walls were closing in on Devyn Michaels and the fantasy that she had put together,” Griffith told the jury.
Prosecutors revealed Michaels and Willette wed in 2012 before divorcing in 2018. Michaels subsequently married Willette’s 29 year old son, Deviere Willette, though she characterised both unions as marriages of convenience, according to testimony.
Deviere Willette, the victim’s son, testified to the jury that he had no part in his father’s killing. Prosecutors presented a video during Thursday’s testimony showing Michaels telling police she was giving her ex-husband a massage in his bedroom when she struck him with what she described as “candlestick-like.
“He didn’t say anything. He stopped moving,” Michaels told the detectives in that interview. Clark County District Court Judge Tierra Jones heard evidence from a Henderson police detective regarding his interviews with Michaels.
Henderson police detective Dennis Ozawa revealed that during one interview, the former adult film star told him she placed Willette’s head in a laundry basket and disposed of it in a bin in her northwest valley home neighbourhood. Neither the murder weapon nor Willette’s head have been found.
Her legal team consistently argued that Michaels lacked the physical capability to decapitate someone of Willette’s build, emphasising that nobody witnessed or heard the killing take place.
“Where’s the testimony of a powered saw?” Michaels’ solicitor, Robert Draskovich, questioned the jury during his closing remarks. “We don’t know when that happened. She didn’t do it.”
Prior to trial, Michaels had admitted guilt to second-degree murder, which would have allowed her to apply for parole after 15 years behind bars. She subsequently attempted to withdraw her plea, but Jones ruled that Michaels had entered it “voluntarily, knowingly and intelligently,” according to court documents.
The former adult film actress, who has also gone by the names Nikki Fairchild and Tracee Taverz, offered an apology before immediately declaring her innocence, which led the case to proceed to trial.
