Mbappe honours AFCON, visits Morocco for ‘best friend’

Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappé showed his appreciation for African football by making a surprise appearance in Morocco to watch the Atlas Lions in action at AFCON 2025.
The French forward, currently enjoying a holiday break from LaLiga, was present in the stands as Morocco faced Mali, thanks to his close personal ties and the growing global appeal of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Mbappé answers Hakimi’s call in Rabat
Mbappé’s visit followed a personal invitation from Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi, his close friend and former PSG teammate.
Photos of the World Cup winner wearing Hakimi’s No. 2 Morocco jersey quickly spread online, capturing the strength of their bond forged during their time together in Paris.
Reports also suggested that another former PSG teammate, Ousmane Dembélé, was in attendance, adding further star power to the occasion.
On the pitch, Hakimi dispelled concerns over an ankle issue by training at full intensity ahead of the match. Morocco, who opened their AFCON 2025 campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win over Comoros, were keen to maintain momentum against a Mali side that had drawn 1-1 with Zambia.
Mbappé’s presence in the stands served as a powerful endorsement of AFCON, reinforcing its status as a tournament that commands attention far beyond the African continent.
Diaz shines as Morocco push forward
Mbappé’s connection to Morocco goes beyond friendship, with the Real Madrid forward also sharing a dressing room with Atlas Lions star Brahim Díaz.
The midfielder once again proved decisive for the hosts, opening the scoring with a late first-half penalty against Mali. It was Díaz’s second goal of the competition, having already netted Morocco’s opener in their first group match against Comoros.
While enjoying his break, Mbappé arrived in Morocco on the back of a historic year with Real Madrid, finishing 2025 with an astonishing 59 goals in 59 games.
That remarkable tally saw him match the club record held by his idol Cristiano Ronaldo. His decision to spend part of his holiday at AFCON, supporting Hakimi and Morocco, highlighted not only personal loyalty but also the tournament’s ability to attract and inspire the biggest names in world football.

BREAKING NEWS: Popular England Coach Sacked Because Christmas – FULL DETAILS
Thomas Tuchel will be hoping for a peaceful Christmas break as the England manager prepares to map out the Three Lions’ World Cup strategy. Following the group stage draw, Tuchel’s squad will face Croatia, Ghana and Panama in their opening fixtures.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
Whilst the German will no doubt want to savour the festive season, he may well be switching his mobile off, mindful of the painful memory of being dismissed by former employers Paris Saint-Germain on Christmas Eve in 2020. The 52-year-old arrived in the French capital in 2018, securing consecutive Ligue 1 championships, the Coupe de France, and guiding PSG to the Champions League final in 2020. Despite these achievements, the German tactician’s position became untenable following several disputes with senior figures at the club.
The official announcement of his dismissal was delayed by several days. When it eventually came, PSG stated that Tuchel had been removed following an “in-depth analysis of its sporting situation”.
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said: “I would like to thank Thomas Tuchel and his staff for everything they brought to the club. Thomas has put a lot of energy and passion into his work, and of course we will remember the good times we shared together. I wish him the best for his future.
“We missed winning the Champions League by one match,” Tuchel reflected on his spell at the Parc des Princes. “And we never had the feeling that we had convinced people and that they recognised our performance. Sometimes that makes you a little sad or angry.”

He continued: “During the first six months I was asking myself, ‘Am I still a coach or a minister of sport?'” PSG ultimately decided to bring in former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino as Tuchel’s replacement, whilst Christophe Galtier and Luis Enrique have subsequently taken charge in the French capital. Tuchel, meanwhile, has experienced quite the rollercoaster ride since departing France.
His stint at Chelsea proved highly successful, culminating in Champions League glory amongst other silverware, before facing dismissal once more. Bayern Munich became his next destination, where he clinched the Bundesliga title, only to suffer yet another sacking.
Tuchel took up the England manager’s position at the beginning of this year and has guided the Three Lions through an impeccable qualifying run for the 2026 World Cup. Barring any dramatic developments, he appears certain to remain in post through Christmas this time.
