JUST IN: Kano Governor, Abba Yusuf Sets to Join APC, Even as Kwankwaso Resists Move
As the frenetic wave of the 2027 general elections continue to blow, Kano State governor , Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reportedly concluded plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to sources who confided in Politics Digest, the governor is expected to announce his decision any moment, having completed consultations with some of his close political allies.
According to findings, Governor Yusuf has, over the past few months, mounted pressure on his political godfather, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to join him in the move. However, the former governor reportedly rejected the proposal, insisting that he will remain in the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP)...TAP TO CONTINUE FULL READING.
Despite repeated attempts to persuade Kwankwaso, Governor Yusuf was unable to secure his support for the defection.
“The governor has met with some members of the State House of Assembly and disclosed his plans to them. The Speaker is expected to issue a statement assuring the governor of his full support, regardless of whatever political decision he makes concerning the state,” a lawmaker who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed.
The source further disclosed that loyalists of Senator Kwankwaso are also expected to issue a counter-statement reaffirming their loyalty to their leader and the NNPP.
“You will see these developments unfold within the coming week, as the governor has already made up his mind despite Kwankwaso’s resistance,” the lawmaker added.
Recall that there had been widespread speculation that both Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf were planning to defect to the APC—a claim Kwankwaso publicly denied.
Kwankwaso’s recent criticisms of the APC have further strengthened the belief among political observers that he has no intention of joining the ruling party.
Efforts to reach the spokespersons of both Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages sent to them were not responded to as of the time of filing this report.

President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Saturday for a three-nation visit to France, Kenya, and Rwanda. He will attend the Africa-France Summit in Nairobi (May 11-12), co-chaired by Presidents Macron and Ruto, focusing on energy transition, digital transformation, and climate action. He will then proceed to the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali (May 14-15), themed “Scale or Fail,” highlighting Nigeria’s investment reforms. The trip will last approximately two weeks.

The Presidency and opposition figure Peter Obi have traded words over the Federal Government’s borrowing profile. Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged Nigerian workers to wield their collective voice and votes to demand competent leadership. In a Workers’ Day statement, Obi said workers must “refuse to reward failure, corruption, ethnic division, and bad governance.” He described workers as the “backbone of every nation” and said the current minimum wage of N70,000 can no longer guarantee a modest standard of living.
