BREAKING NEWS: Finally Nationwide Protests Looms Over New Tax Laws – FULL DETAILS
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commenced nationwide mobilisation of students to protest the implementation of the new tax laws, which took effect on Thursday, January 1, 2026.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
The student body declared January 14, 2026, as a National Day of Action, announcing plans for a mass protest in Abuja against what it described as a controversial and disputed Tax Reform Law.
The development comes despite President Bola Tinubu insisting that there was “no substantial issue” capable of warranting a suspension of the reform process.
The tax reform has sparked intense controversy following allegations that the versions of the tax laws gazetted differ from those passed by the National Assembly.
Several stakeholders, including the Nigerian Bar Association, the Nigeria Labour Congress, and the minority caucus of the House of Representatives, had called for a halt to the implementation pending clarification.
A member of the House of Representatives, Abdussamad Dasuki, had alleged discrepancies between the copies passed by lawmakers and those later gazetted.
Reacting to the decision to proceed with implementation, NANS President, Olushola Oladoja, faulted the move, describing it as premature and anti-democratic.
He said implementing the tax law from January 1 while unresolved issues remained “is not only unfortunate but a dangerous precedent for a government that claims commitment to participatory reforms and democratic values.”
According to him, the Presidency’s statement reaffirming implementation amounted to “a grave insult to Nigerians” and reflected “hegemony, high-handedness and outright disregard for citizens.”
Oladoja announced that students would converge at Unity Fountain, Abuja, on January 14, before marching to the Presidential Villa.
“As the NANS President, I call on all NANS structures—campus chapters, state joints, zonal coordinators and the national secretariat—to commence immediate massive mobilisation for a peaceful mass protest,” he said.
“Our demand is clear and non-negotiable: immediate suspension of the implementation of the deeply controversial Tax Reform Law.”
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) also warned that the new tax laws could face legal hurdles if the controversy over their authenticity is not resolved.
Speaking to journalists in Ilawe-Ekiti, Falana said the government should have used the closing days of 2025 to address concerns and release “clean copies” of the laws.
“Until we have clean copies, you cannot talk of commencement,” he said, adding that allegations of inserted provisions amounted to forgery.
Falana also criticised the failure of the National Assembly to make the laws readily available online and threatened legal action over what he described as discriminatory tax exemptions for wealthy companies operating in Free Trade Zones.

BREAKING NEWS: Court Grants Bail to Bauchi Finance Commissioner Over Alleged N5.7bn Fraud
The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday granted bail to Bauchi State Commissioner for Finance, Yakubu Adamu, who is standing trial over allegations of involvement in a N5.7 billion fraud.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
Trial Justice Emeka Nwite approved bail in the sum of N500 million, with two sureties of similar value.
The court ruled that the sureties must own verifiable landed property within the Asokoro, Maitama, or Gwarinpa districts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, and must depose to an affidavit of means.
The court also ordered Adamu to surrender his international passport and prohibited him from travelling abroad without prior permission. Full proceedings in the case were scheduled to begin on January 20.
Adamu, a former branch manager of Polaris Bank in Bauchi, was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) last Tuesday on a six-count money laundering charge.
Two companies, Ayab Agro Products and Freight Company Limited, were also cited as defendants.
The EFCC alleged that funds earmarked for the supply of motorcycles to Bauchi State were illegally diverted to various individuals and entities, despite the contract not being executed. The acts were said to contravene Section 21(a) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Adamu pleaded not guilty to the charges, while his lawyer, Mr. Gordy Uche, SAN, applied for bail pending the outcome of the trial. EFCC counsel, Mr. Samuel Chime, opposed the bail request and sought an accelerated hearing. Justice Nwite, however, ruled that bail was within the court’s discretion, noting that the offences were bailable.
Adamu will remain in Kuje Prison until Monday, when the court will hear a separate terrorism-related charge pending against him.
According to EFCC investigations, Emmanuel Asomugha General Enterprises secured a loan of N4.65 billion from Polaris Bank, purportedly guaranteed by the Bauchi State Government, to supply motorcycles.
The agency said the motorcycles were never delivered, and the funds were diverted through Adamu and former Accountant-General of Bauchi State, Sa’idu Abubakar, to multiple accounts, including those of the two companies cited.
The prosecution further alleged that Adamu, while acting as Polaris Bank Branch Manager, conspired with others to convert, transfer, and conceal N4.65 billion, and also handled N976 million paid into the account of I.S. Makayye Investment Resources Limited, knowing the funds were proceeds of unlawful activity.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has fired back at criticisms from Ohanaeze Ndigbo President, Senator John Mbata, turning attacks about his past into a bold story of political rise.
Speaking in a video aired on AIT, Wike addressed claims that he is “semi-illiterate” and once worked as a car washer. Rather than deny it, the minister embraced the narrative, insisting his journey speaks louder than insults.
“I heard someone ranting that I’m semi-illiterate. That’s fine—at least I’m not fully illiterate,” Wike said.
He went further, stressing that even if he once washed cars, that did not stop his progress. “Somebody who was washing his car has grown to be council chairman, governor, and a two-term minister,” he declared.
Wike’s remarks have since sparked intense reactions online, reigniting debates about humility, success, and political pedigree.
