2027: Atiku Aide Accuses Presidency of Panic Over Peter Obi’s Defection to ADC

Reacting to comments attributed to the Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, Atiku’s Special Adviser on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said the Presidency’s response reflected anxiety rather than confidence, arguing that Obi’s defection had exposed deeper fears within the ruling camp.
In a statement issued on behalf of the former Vice President, Shaibu said Onanuga’s remarks fell short of the restraint expected from a presidential spokesperson, describing the tone as defensive and unbecoming.
“As media adviser to President Bola Tinubu, this outburst says more about panic in Aso Rock than it does about Peter Obi,” Shaibu said.
“You did not write as a media manager; you wrote as a defender under pressure. And pressure replaces reason with ridicule and facts with abuse.”
He accused the Presidency of hypocrisy, noting that branding Obi as “wandering” was ironic given Nigeria’s long history of political defections.
“Calling Obi ‘wandering’ while defending an administration built on political migrations and elite bargains is hypocrisy dressed up as commentary. Nigerian politics has never been a monastery. Pretending otherwise insults your own record,” he added.
Shaibu also rejected attempts to downplay public dissatisfaction over the 2023 general elections, insisting that electoral grievances remain legitimate and widespread.
“Your attempt to label legitimate electoral grievances as ‘bitterness’ is not analysis; it is damage control. Millions of Nigerians questioned the 2023 process. You can sneer at them, but you cannot erase them,” he said.
According to him, resorting to name-calling in government communication often signals a lack of tangible achievements.
“When government communication descends into insults, it is usually because results are scarce and anger is abundant,” Shaibu said.
He further criticised the administration’s policy direction, accusing it of promoting propaganda disconnected from the realities Nigerians face.
“You dismiss global ideas while defending policies copied wholesale from elsewhere. You praise ‘homegrown solutions’ while celebrating reforms Nigerians experience only as hunger, insecurity, and collapsing livelihoods. Propaganda does not change lived reality,” he stated.
Shaibu dismissed suggestions that Obi would play a subordinate role in any future political arrangement, insisting that discussions among opposition figures were centred on coalition-building rather than imposed hierarchies.
“Your confidence that Obi will ‘play second fiddle’ to Atiku is pure fiction. There is no ticket, no candidate, no imposed hierarchy. What exists is a coalition conversation, and that is what truly unsettles you,” he said.
He concluded that the growing tension was not about Obi’s defection but about the 2027 elections.
“This is not about Obi; it is about 2027. It is about fear that Nigerians are organising beyond your control. Insults don’t win elections, spin doesn’t fill stomachs, and arrogance does not intimidate hungry people. Nigerians will decide in 2027,” Shaibu added.

The governor was apparently reacting to the renewed hostility between him and the Minister.
But reacting, while addressing the people of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA) on Friday, said the barking dog made Fubara governor.
He said, “This dog that’s barking now barked, even when Rivers people didn’t know who the person was and the dog that barked made the person to be governor when others ran away and he’s not afraid that the same dog now is barking. I wish him goodluck.
“We have decided to for Asiwaju Tinubu. There’s no discussion about that, but there’s one we must take a decision. We won’t make the mistake we made last time. We would correct the mistake.
“I heard him say those who worked with Atiku are back. They couldn’t give Atiku 10%. So, what is the political advantage. I won’t call their names, but you all know them”.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections, outlining key dates for voter registration, party primaries, campaigns, and the conduct of the polls.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
According to the timetable, Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will commence in April 2026 and run until January 2027. During this period, eligible Nigerians will be able to register as new voters, replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), transfer their voting locations, and update their records upon attaining the age of 18.
INEC also fixed political party primaries for all elective positions to hold between July 1 and September 30, 2026. Political parties are expected to conduct congresses at ward, local government, state, and national levels and submit the outcomes of their primaries to the Commission within one week of conclusion.
The submission of candidates’ lists is scheduled for October 1 to October 31, 2026. Parties are required to upload the names of their candidates and running mates through INEC’s online nomination portal. The final list of candidates will be published on November 15, 2026.
Campaign activities for the Presidential and National Assembly elections will begin on November 18, 2026, and end on February 19, 2027. Campaigns for Governorship and State Assembly elections will commence on December 15, 2026, and conclude on March 5, 2027.
INEC has slated the Presidential and National Assembly elections for Saturday, February 20, 2027, while the Governorship and State Assembly elections will hold on Saturday, March 6, 2027.
Other critical activities captured in the timetable include the display of the voters’ register in October 2026, collection of PVCs from December 2026 to February 2027, training of ad-hoc election staff within the same period, and the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive election materials between February and March 2027.
The Commission urged political parties, stakeholders, and the electorate to strictly adhere to the timelines to ensure a smooth, credible, and transparent electoral process.

Naija News reports that the Plateau Governor was formally presented with a membership card from the APC today.
Recall that in a letter to his Ward Chairman of Ampang West Ward in the Mangu Local Government Area on December 29, 2025, Mutfwang had resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The governor cited the need for focused leadership, clear direction and improved service delivery.
Governor Mutfwang announced that his resignation is with immediate effect.
The letter, acknowledged by the ward leadership a day later, conveyed appreciation to the party for affording him the opportunity to serve within the democratic system.
Mutfwang thanked party leaders and supporters for their backing over the years, noting that prevailing political circumstances necessitated his decision.
