SIM Fubara: Nyesom Wike–Basiru Clash Stirs Massive Tension Within Ruling APC Party
On Monday, a fresh round of political drama erupted between the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike over Rivers State politics.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
The development followed sharp exchanges involving Wike, APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, and the party’s National Vice Chairman (South-South), Chief Victor Giadom.
The controversy centres on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who recently moved to the All Progressives Congress from the Peoples Democratic Party.
DAILY POST reports that Fubara has since his defection to the APC appeared to have endeared himself to the party’s hierarchy.
Some of the APC hierarchy have been praising his projects across the state, a development which didn’t sit well with Wike.
The latest twist in the rivalry between Wike and Fubara came after Chief Victor Giadom referred to Governor Fubara as a “so-called Governor” at a political gathering in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Giadom, who is the APC National Vice Chairman for the South-South zone, also declared Gokana a “no-go area” for politicians, insisting that anyone seeking electoral success in the area must first obtain the approval of the former Rivers State governor.
The comments immediately generated outrage across political circles, with many viewing them as disrespectful to the office of the governor and inflammatory in the already volatile Rivers political climate.
Basiru rebukes Gaidom
Reacting to Giadom’s remarks, APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, publicly rebuked the South-South vice chairman, describing his comments as “unfortunate” and unbecoming of a member of the party’s National Working Committee, NWC.
Basiru stressed that regardless of political allegiances or internal disagreements, the office of a sitting governor must be respected.
“I find it unfortunate that a member of the NWC… was referring to a governor as a ‘so-called governor of Rivers State,’” Basiru said.
“No matter what his allegiances are, it is unbecoming of somebody holding such a sensitive position.”
Basiru added that even governors from opposition parties deserved respect, noting that the governorship office is “an exalted position” that should not be diminished for political convenience.
Wike fires warning shot at Basiru
However, Basiru’s intervention did not sit well with Wike.
The current FCT minister, although of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, issued a stern warning to the APC scribe, cautioning him to stay away from Rivers State politics.
Wike spoke on Monday during a thank-you visit to Oyigbo Local Government Area, where he accused unnamed political actors of exploiting the alleged N600 billion left in Rivers State’s coffers to make reckless and provocative statements.
The Minister specifically referenced comments attributed to Giadom, reiterating claims that Governor Fubara could not secure a second term without Wike’s backing, and warned Basiru against making what he described as careless remarks about Rivers affairs.
Basiru hits back, calls for Wike’s resignation
To the very shock of many, the war of words escalated further when Basiru responded with a strongly worded statement from Abuja, accusing Wike of attempting to destabilise the APC.
Basiru said he was shocked that his call for respect for sitting governors could provoke what he described as “uncouth responses” from a serving member of the Federal Executive Council.
He insisted that it was incompatible for Wike to remain in the cabinet of an APC-led government while allegedly fomenting internal crisis within the party.
“He cannot be in the Federal Executive Council of an APC Government and be causing confusion within any organ or structure of the Party,” Basiru stated, adding that “the honourable thing to do is to resign his appointment as Minister.”
The APC National Secretary further argued that Wike lacked the authority to interfere in the party’s internal affairs, stressing that party records did not list the FCT minister as a registered APC member.
“Our records indicate that Minister Nyesom Wike is not a member of our Party APC, so he lacks the locus to dabble into the affairs of our Party,” Basiru declared.
Cracks within APC
Reacting to the development, a senior official of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who spoke to DAILY POST on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter, described the public exchange as “deeply embarrassing.”
He warned that the continued war of words could undermine the APC’s credibility ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to the official, internal disagreements should be handled through established party mechanisms rather than through media statements that project disunity and weaken the party’s moral authority.
He further cautioned that the oil rich Niger Delta state remains politically strategic to the APC, adding that unresolved internal conflicts could cost the party dearly if allowed to fester.
The party chieftain urged all sides to prioritise party unity over personal influence and ambition.
“I must state categorically that the fiery exchange is embarrassing and unnecessary. And it is not doing the APC any good rather a serious damage to the image of the party,” the senior APC official said.
“If this kind of thing continues unchecked, it will not only weaken our unity but also cost the party politically, especially in a swing state like Rivers,” he added.
APC must urgently de-escalate – Analyst
Speaking in an interview with DAILY POST, Nduka Odo, a public affairs analyst and communication expert at Peaceland University, Enugu, described the unfolding crisis as a classic example of elite power struggle spilling into the public domain.
According to him, the controversy reflects deeper structural weaknesses in party discipline and internal conflict-resolution mechanisms.
Odo argued that the language used by key actors in the dispute is particularly troubling.
“When senior figures resort to open confrontation, it signals a breakdown of internal communication and discipline, and it inevitably shifts public attention away from governance to personal rivalries.
“Expressions that question the legitimacy of a sitting governor or issue public ultimatums are dangerous because they are designed to provoke rather than resolve conflict. Such language escalates tension and makes reconciliation more difficult.
“Going forward, the APC must urgently de-escalate this conflict by pulling discussions away from the media and reasserting its internal conflict-resolution mechanisms.
“If the party fails to do so, it risks deepening internal divisions and presenting itself to the public as disorganised and incapable of managing its own affairs,” he cautioned.

2027 P’ELECTION: Reasons Peter Obi is asking for African Democratic Congress, ADC ticket – Ibrahim Abdulkareem
The Director-General of Big TENT Nigeria, Ibrahim Abdulkareem, has stated why former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is seeking the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress, ADC.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
Speaking during an interview on ‘Prime Time’, a programme on Arise Television monitored by DAILY POST on Wednesday, Abdulkareem said Obi is not asking for the ADC ticket on a platter.
He said Obi wants to unite Nigeria and wants the ADC to be the option for the people of Nigeria who clearly do not want a one-party state.
“Peter Obi didn’t just come out and join the ADC. He was part of the ADC from the first day and he made it very clear for everybody that wants to hear.
“He said I would be part of this coalition if it’s not just for us to grab power and give to somebody but if it’s for us to come together and create a system that would work for Nigeria because Nigerians have been longing for good and genuine leadership.
“And he has done what none of these people, including president Bola Tinubu himself has done because what he did is that before fully declaring for the ADC, he talked to the Obidients.
“Nobody at all his meetings, there’s no fora anywhere that Peter Obi is asking somebody to give him this ADC ticket on a platter of gold.
“What he said is that what he has done in his previous engagement with people, what Nigerians have said and also putting something that would unite us together, most especially giving the young Nigerians who want to see a new Nigeria that hope of a better nation,” Abdulkareem said.

Addressing journalists during the peaceful rally, the APC leaders said their action was driven by “deep concern for the stability of the APC, the security of our nation, and the sanctity of democratic principles.”
They declared: “We have scheduled a rally today, this is a peaceful assembly of loyal party faithful, dedicated to upholding the integrity of our great party and your visionary leadership.”
The groups, who described themselves as steadfast supporters of President Tinubu and the Renewed Hope Agenda, said they could no longer remain silent over what they termed “egregious misconduct” by the FCT minister.

According to the statement, “Wike’s actions represent a brazen assault on the APC’s leadership, a direct threat to your authority as President, and a dangerous incitement that could destabilize Rivers State and the entire Niger Delta region. We demand his immediate sack to preserve party unity, protect our elected officials, and safeguard national peace.”
*Alleged Attacks on APC Leadership*
The rally leaders accused Wike of launching “vicious, unprovoked attacks” on the APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, despite not being a registered member of the ruling party.
They recalled Wike’s comments during his January 5, 2026, “thank-you tour” of Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he allegedly accused Basiru of meddling in Rivers politics for personal gain and eyeing the state’s resources.
Quoting Wike, the statement said he warned that anyone interfering in Rivers politics would “get their fingers burnt.”
The APC groups described the remark as “not only an insult to Basiru’s integrity but a direct affront to the entire APC National Working Committee,” adding that it undermined the authority of the party’s national leadership.
*Rivers Crisis and Governor Fubara*
The groups also accused the FCT minister of persistently attacking Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing his actions as “political sabotage.”
They alleged that Wike had mocked the governor’s leadership, called his emergence a “mistake,” and vowed it would be corrected in 2027.
According to the statement, “As a serving minister in an APC-led government, Wike’s actions amount to anti-party activities that weaken our hold on Rivers State—a key battleground for the APC’s future electoral success.”
*Threat to National Authority*
The APC leaders further expressed alarm over Wike’s alleged statement that “nobody can enter Rivers State,” which they described as a direct challenge to President Tinubu’s authority as Commander-in-Chief.
They warned that declaring Rivers a “no-go area” was “a dangerous provocation that could incite violence, reminiscent of past Niger Delta crises.”
The statement added: “Wike’s words are a direct attack on your presidency, suggesting he views himself above the law and the APC’s hierarchy.”
*Threat of Nationwide Protests*
The groups warned that protests would continue across the country until Wike is removed from office.
“Be informed that we shall proceed with this rally not only at the National Secretariat but across the length and breadth of this country—state by state, local government by local government—until Nyesom Wike is relieved of his appointment as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory,” they declared.
They said the action was in defence of the party, President Tinubu’s leadership and Nigeria’s unity.
*Call for Swift Action*
The APC Leaders Forum and TSSM said the rally was also held in solidarity with Governor Fubara, Senator Basiru and APC National Chairman, Prof. Yilwatda.
They urged President Tinubu to act decisively, stating: “Sack Wike immediately to send a clear message that no individual is bigger than the party or the nation.”
The statement was jointly signed by Chief Dr. Emeka Okoro, Dr. Adekunle Balogun, Alhaji Ibrahim Yusuf and Mallam Abdulkareem Isiaka, who reaffirmed their loyalty to President Tinubu and commitment to mobilising support for the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking on TVC News, Oladele argued that for Wike to have favored Fubara over Austin Opara, the governor ought to have shown greater loyalty and respect to his political benefactor. He stressed that political mentorship should never be repaid with actions perceived as betrayal.
Oladele warned that loyalty and reward systems remain the backbone of political stability, especially in Rivers State where Wike has played a defining role in shaping leadership outcomes. He also criticized Fubara’s alleged defection moves, saying proper consultation with key APC figures like Tony Okocha and Magnus Abbe was ignored.
According to him, failure to respect party structures and senior leaders could weaken unity and threaten electoral success in Rivers State.
