Peter Obi Calls For Suspension Of Controversial Tax Laws
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged the federal government to suspend the implementation of the new tax law.
Naija News reports that the former Anambra governor warned that it is poorly structured and unfair to Nigerians who are already struggling with economic hardship.
Obi made the call in a post on X, formerly Twitter, where he raised concerns about the changes introduced in the tax system.
He pointed out that the laws have been altered in a way that has created serious problems, saying that global accounting firm KPMG reportedly identified 31 major issues ranging from drafting mistakes to policy conflicts and administrative gaps.
According to Obi, it is worrying that such flaws only came to light after private engagements between the National Revenue Service and KPMG.
He argued that if experts need closed-door meetings to fully understand the tax laws, ordinary Nigerians would find it almost impossible to grasp what is being demanded of them.
The former Anambra State Governor explained that taxation is more than a means of generating revenue, describing it as a social agreement between the government and the people.
He stressed that such an agreement cannot work if citizens do not understand it or trust those enforcing it.
Obi further stated that in many parts of the world, tax policies are backed by visible benefits such as better healthcare, quality education, job creation, improved infrastructure and strong social support systems.
He said the situation in Nigeria is different, as the focus appears to be on increasing revenue collection without clearly showing citizens what they stand to gain in return.
The ADC chieftain also criticised the lack of broad consultations before the tax laws were finalised. Obi noted that in standard practice, governments engage businesses, workers and civil groups for months or years before presenting tax proposals, ensuring people understand both their obligations and the benefits involved.
He said this process was missing in Nigeria, leaving citizens confused about the new rules and their purpose.
The former presidential candidate added that enforcement is being pushed without consensus or clear communication, even as Nigerians are yet to see relief following the removal of fuel subsidies.
He said many citizens are battling rising food prices, high transport costs, reduced purchasing power and increasing poverty.
Obi warned that introducing a wide-ranging tax regime filled with inconsistencies at such a time reflects poor governance.
He said taxation without trust feels like punishment, while a system without clarity creates confusion and hardship.
According to him, Nigeria must not place additional pressure on its citizens and called on the government to listen, communicate better and build national agreement before moving forward.
Obi said genuine reform can only happen through trust, understanding and shared benefits, adding that building a new Nigeria is no longer optional but necessary.

BREAKING NEWS: 2 More Rivers Lawmakers Withdraw From Move To Impeach Fubara [Photo]
Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have called on their colleagues to halt the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy Ngozi Odu.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
Naija News reports that the appeal, made by Barile Nwakoh, representing Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, comes just 24 hours after two other lawmakers made similar calls for a peaceful resolution.
While maintaining that the governor and deputy allegedly breached constitutional provisions, the lawmakers stated that their position shift was influenced by interventions from well-meaning leaders within the state.
This latest development brings the number of lawmakers who initially signed the impeachment notice but are now calling for a peaceful resolution to four out of the 26 original signatories. The political impasse continues to evolve, with signs that some members of the assembly are seeking an alternative to the ongoing impeachment process.
Rivers State House of Assembly is expected to reconvene on January 15, 2026, to further discuss the matter.
In a related report, Naija News recalls that Sylvanus Nwankwo, the Minority Leader representing Omuma Constituency, and Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency had also withdrawn their support for the impeachment move. They cited appeals from respected political figures both within and outside the state, urging the assembly to explore peaceful resolutions rather than continue with the impeachment proceedings.
Nwankwo and Abbey had called on the assembly to cease the impeachment process and consider alternative methods for resolving the crisis that has gripped the state’s leadership.

Defection Saga Looms: Kwankwaso directs Gov. Yusuf’s appointees, lawmakers to ‘play along’ as governor compiles list of loyalists
A former governor of Kano State and leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has asked all government appointees and members of the State and National Assemblies to “play along” as Governor Abba Yusuf orders compilation of list of his loyalists.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
The list of the loyalists is being compiled to negotiate stake as the governor prepares to defect to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
In a video address shared on social media, Mr Kwankwaso said a number of appointees, caucus members and lawmakers are under intense pressure to append their signatures on the list of those who endorsed the governor’s defection to APC.
“I am dismayed by the government’s decision to put pressure on local chairmen and councillors, secretaries and other appointees to choose between Kwankwasiyya (NNPP) and Gandujiyya (APC).
“This is indeed troubling. All our supporters, not only in Kano but nationwide, will not be happy with this.
“Drawing from history, we have seen what happened in our dear state, especially in 2015 when we witnessed the worst form of betrayal. Our supporters resigned to their fate because of the patriotism and waited till 2019.
“Even though we had no any political office such as chairmen or councillors, no lawmakers but a few ones, they (APC) had everything at their behest. And despite this, people voted for us. Although everyone knows we won the election, they robbed us of our victory.
“We therefore waited patiently till 2023, and people came out en masse to vote for this present government with the hope of getting good governance.
“Our system (Kwankwasiyya) is built on loyalty. Whoever chooses to be disloyal, the only option is to leave (defect).
“The choice in Kano is between lightness and darkness. And we are happy the people have understood this.
“The appointees are in a dire situation, they are disturbed since the issue of going to Tinubu and Ganduje’s party came up. A number of local government chairmen and some councillors have called me, lamenting about their dilemma. Some are in distress and hospitalised, while others are having sleepless nights.
“After due consultation, in view of the fact that our supporters have given so much towards bringing the government — and the government is owing them — we call on the chairmen, councillors and all others to append their signatures.
“We believe it not yet electioneering period of 2027, and our supporters wherever they are will show up in the time of need.
“If signing the loyalty list will take them out of the distressing situation they found themselves in and also douse the tension in the state, so be it,” Mr Kwankwaso said.
