Former Lawmaker Calls For Reconciliation As Rivers Assembly Tensions Linger

Published

on

A former federal lawmaker, Ogbonna Nwuke, has recalled the last sitting of the Rivers State House of Assembly before it adjourned plenary until January 15, noting that developments since then suggest the House may reconsider its stance.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING

Naija News reports that Nwuke, who represented Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and also served as Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, said it appeared the larger House was beginning to bend after hearing interventions from various quarters, including within its own ranks.

Speaking with Punch on the impeachment proceedings initiated against Siminalayi Fubara, the former lawmaker noted that several developments followed the Assembly’s last sitting.

Nwuke said, “You and I know that after that sitting when they commenced the impeachment against the governor, many developments began to come up.

“You know that four of their colleagues have pulled out of the impeachment.”

He added that the dissenting lawmakers did not stop at withdrawing their support but also appealed to other members to do the same.

“They didn’t stop there, but also called on fellow House members in the camp to also withdraw. So naturally, I’m certain that quite a number of people and expectations are high,” he said.

Nwuke said lawmakers would likely weigh these developments carefully when they reconvene.

“They (lawmakers) probably will sit and look at all of that. If there are rumours of impeachment, it is entirely a problem of the House,” he added.

The former lawmaker emphasised the need for synergy between the executive and legislative arms of government to promote peace and development in Rivers State.

According to him, reconciliation remains the most viable path forward.

Nwuke said, “I think what great minds in Rivers State want at this time in our history is a clear understanding that there will be no impeachment.

“A clear understanding that there will be a working relationship between the House and the executive arm.”

Nwuke said such expectations reflect the general mood of the people of the state.

“These are the expectations, very likely, and I’m sure quite a number of Rivers people agree to this,” he said.

He expressed hope that when the House reconvenes, its direction would become clearer to the public.

“So we are hoping that when the House reconvenes, people will be able to study the mood of the House and be able to understand what direction the House is following at this time,” he added.

Abba Abubakar backs Tinubu

Reports said Abba Abubakar not only joined the APC but also openly declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

The move has stirred political reactions, given Atiku Abubakar’s continued association with the opposition coalition under the ADC platform.
Olayinka questions opposition unity

Reacting online, Olayinka questioned why a son of a leading opposition figure would abandon his father’s party for the ruling party.

He suggested the development exposed confusion and lack of unity within the opposition camp ahead of the next general election.
Social media mockery follows defection

Olayinka also highlighted the different political paths taken by Atiku Abubakar and his sons to further mock the opposition coalition.

He wrote: “Atiku Abubakar is in ADC. His son, Adamu is the Commissioner for Works & Energy Development in the PDP govt of Adamawa State.

Another of Atiku’s Son, Abba has decamped to APC.

BREAKING NEWS: My son’s defection to APC a ‘personal choice’, says Atiku

Published

on

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has said the decision of his son, Abba Abubakar, to join the All Progressives Congress was a personal choice and not a cause for alarm.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING

In a statement issued on Thursday via X, Atiku said political choices made by family members were normal in a democracy and insisted he did not interfere with the conscience of his children or Nigerians.

“The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal. In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect,” Atiku said.

He added, “As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians.”

Atiku, however, criticised the ruling party, saying his main concern remained governance and the state of the country. “What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people,” he said.

He further stated, “I remain resolute in working with like-minded patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative that brings relief, hope, and progress.”

PUNCH Online had earlier reported that Abba Abubakar defected from the PDP to the ruling APC, pledging to work for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

The defection was announced on Thursday at the National Assembly, Abuja, where Abba was formally received by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, alongside key APC leaders from the North-East geopolitical zone.

Addressing party leaders and supporters at the event, Abba announced his resignation from the PDP and declared his decision to join the APC, describing the move as historic and personal.

“My name is Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, but everyone calls me Abba. I am here today to formally announce my exit from my former party, where we worked in 2023, and my decision to join the APC,” he said.

He also cited the leadership of the Deputy Senate President as a factor in his decision, saying, “Today, I’m here to formally announce my exit from my former party to the APC following the outstanding leadership style and quality of His Excellency, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin.”

Abba added that he would mobilise support for the ruling party ahead of the next election. “With this development, I will work with Senator Barau to actualise the second-term bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu come 2027. To this effect, I’m directing all coordinators of my association to join the APC and work for President Tinubu,” he said.
