Five Famous Lagos neighbourhoods where IJGBs (I Just Got Backs) stay

Every December, Lagos transforms into the heartbeat of Africa’s festive season, and with that comes the annual return of the IJGBs (I Just Got Backs). These are Nigerians who live abroad and fly home for Detty December, bringing with them foreign accents, fashion, and a hunger for premium Lagos experiences.
They arrive from all corners of the world, drawn by the city’s irresistible blend of nostalgia, luxury, and chaos that somehow makes perfect sense. From beachfront apartments to rooftop lounges, these neighbourhoods become the heartbeat of the holiday season, where connections, culture, and partying flow freely...TAP TO CONTINUE FULL READING.
Here are five Lagos neighbourhoods where IJGBs love to stay, chill, and catch all the December action:
1. Lekki Phase 1
When it comes to IJGBs’ life, Lekki Phase 1 is ground zero. Lekki phase one is where you will find the most Airbnbs, influencers, and brunch spots per square kilometre in Lagos. The streets buzz with activity from food trucks and art pop-ups to pool parties and rooftop events. Everyone seems to know someone here, and the social calendar never ends. For those seeking comfort, proximity to the best restaurants, and the full Detty December experience, Lekki is unbeatable.
2. Victoria Island
Victoria Island is where Lagos luxury truly unfolds. It offers everything an IJGB could ask for, from five-star hotels and private lounges to high-end dining and waterfront apartments with skyline views and iconic clubs like Quilox and DNA. It is close to all the major December event venues yet just calm enough to recharge between nights out, rom business brunches to boat cruises, Victoria Island’s polished vibe attracts young professionals, celebrities, and entrepreneurs who want the best of Lagos without losing their privacy.
3. Ikoyi
For the IJGB who prefers sophistication over noise, Ikoyi is home. This serene upscale area offers privacy, with lush avenues, diplomatic residences, and some of the city’s most secure and exclusive estates. But do not mistake calm for boring, as Ikoyi has seen a rise in high-end restaurants, hidden bars, and luxury apartments that cater to returnees seeking a quieter and more refined Lagos experience. With Banana Island nearby, Ikoyi offers a taste of Lagos luxury wrapped in calm elegance.
Controversies over Lagos’ ownership needless, says group
4. Yaba
Yaba is where Lagos’s creative spirit thrives. It is less about glitz and more about good vibes. Think streetwear pop-ups, art exhibitions, tech hubs, and rooftop live music. IJGBs who crave authentic connection and local culture are increasingly finding Yaba refreshing. It is also one of the few places where the city’s old-school rhythm meets youthful innovation, making it a growing favourite for those who want a genuine Lagos experience.
5. Ikeja
Ikeja has long been the gateway to Lagos life, and it is still where many IJGBs first land before the parties begin. It is close to the airport, packed with malls, and home to some of the city’s best hotels and lounges. Beyond convenience, Ikeja is known for its balance, lively but affordable, central yet less chaotic than the island. For many IJGBs, it is the perfect place to reconnect with family while still being a quick ride away from all the December action.

New CBN BVN Rules: 5 Things Nigerians Must Know From May 1

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has introduced new Bank Verification Number (BVN) rules effective from May 1, 2026, aimed at reducing fraud, especially SIM swap and identity theft cases. The regulations include stricter controls on phone number changes, age restrictions, device limits, and temporary account restrictions for suspicious activities. Here is a simple breakdown of what you need to know.
One phone number change in a lifetime – Customers can only change the phone number linked to their BVN once. Choose carefully.
24-hour watchlist for suspicious BVNs – Banks can temporarily restrict accounts flagged for suspicious activity while investigations are conducted.
BVN registration is now for adults only – Only individuals aged 18 and above can independently register for a BVN. Minors require guardian-linked arrangements.
One device per banking app – You can only use your banking app on one device at a time. Switching devices triggers a 24-hour transaction limit of N20,000.
Authorised channels only – BVN services are now limited to CBN-approved banks and financial institutions. Avoid third-party apps or unofficial agents.
The new rules may feel strict, but they are designed to protect your money and reduce fraud. Be more careful with your phone number, devices, and banking activities to avoid unnecessary restrictions...TAP TO CONTINUE FULL READING.
