Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) Shiites Protest In Katsina, Demand Action Over Rising Kidnappings In Northern Nigeria

Passers-by gathered as protesters hoisted placards condemning what they described as the government’s “deadly silence” toward the kidnapping crisis ravaging the region.

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiites, on Tuesday poured into the streets of Katsina city, demanding urgent government action as kidnappings and school abductions escalate across the northern region.

The march followed fresh mass abductions of schoolchildren in Kebbi and Niger states, incidents that have intensified public anger and fear.

The demonstrators, chanting solidarity songs, converged at the Kaura Underpass and the adjoining flyover, where they staged a peaceful sit-out that briefly slowed traffic.

Passers-by gathered as protesters hoisted placards condemning what they described as the government’s “deadly silence” toward the kidnapping crisis ravaging the region.

A Katsina-based security expert, Malam Bakatsine, who monitored the protest, told SaharaReporters that the demonstration reflected growing frustration among citizens who feel abandoned by authorities.

According to him, the IMN march was “a warning sign the government cannot afford to ignore,” noting that people were no longer willing to endure the daily terror caused by bandits.

Bakatsine added that the protest also highlighted a widening security gap across the North, where communities repeatedly call for protection yet receive little to no response.

He said the Kaura Underpass gathering symbolised “a community at breaking point, tired of mourning, tired of waiting, and tired of empty assurances.”

In recent months, northern communities have been gripped by an alarming escalation in abductions, with armed groups targeting schools, highways, farmlands and villages.

Families say they now live in fear, unsure when the next attack will strike. Several states have witnessed coordinated assaults that left dozens missing, deepening public distrust in the government’s ability to protect citizens.

Efforts by SaharaReporters to get the reaction of the Katsina State Police Command were unsuccessful. Calls and text messages sent to the command’s spokesperson, SP Sadiq, were not answered as of the time of filing this report.

The latest school abductions in Kebbi and Niger are yet another reminder, residents say, that no community is truly safe.

According to the IMN protesters, the Nigerian government must move swiftly to secure the release of abducted students and strengthen protections for civilians across the region.

“Peace cannot exist where insecurity thrives,” one of the organisers said as chants of “Free our children!” echoed through the procession.

Beneficiaries of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) in Anambra State have endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office and donated N10,735,500 towards the purchase of his expression of interest form. Speaking at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University in Igbariam on Friday, the Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Council in Anambra State, Ifeanyichukwu Chukwuemeka, described the gesture as a show of appreciation for Tinubu’s educational reforms and youth-focused policies. The students said the endorsement recognises the impact of the loan scheme on access to higher education.

Students who benefited from government loans are now publicly backing the president’s re-election.
The N10.7 million donation raises questions about where students sourced such a large sum.
