France captain Kylian Mbappe has overtaken Lionel Messi in the race for the World Cup Golden Boot after scoring his eighth goal of the tournament in France’s 2-0 quarter-final win over Morocco.
Mbappe missed a first-half penalty but redeemed himself in the 60th minute with a sublime curling effort past Yassine Bono. Ousmane Dembele added the second six minutes later.
Both Mbappe and Messi have eight goals, but the Frenchman leads on assists with two, while Messi has one. Erling Haaland of Norway follows with seven goals. France will face either Belgium or Spain in the semi-finals.
