Utah death row inmate with dementia dies of natural causes 3 months after execution was halted
A Utah man who had his execution blocked after developing dementia during his nearly 40 years on death row died of apparent natural causes, according to the state’s Department of Corrections.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
Ralph Leroy Menzies, 67, died Wednesday.
The state Supreme Court in August blocked his execution scheduled for Sept. 5 after his attorneys successfully argued that his dementia had become too severe. A new competency hearing to reevaluate his mental state was set for next month.
He was sentenced to die by firing squad for his conviction in the abduction and killing of Maurine Hunsaker, a 26-year-old mother of three, near Salt Lake City in 1986. Menzies was sentenced to death in 1988.

Ralph Menzies, convicted of killing Maurine Hunsaker, attends his commutation hearing at the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake City Aug. 15, 2025.
The victim’s husband, Jim Hunsaker, said he had a “happy feeling” and like a huge weight had been lifted off him when he learned of Menzies’ death.
“I think a lot of it is going to be just healing now,” he told The Associated Press. “I don’t think there was a day that I didn’t think about it.”
He expressed frustration about how the state’s judicial system handled Menzies’ case, saying his family experienced “one disappointment after another” for decades.
“It seems like everything went his way,” he said.
Menzies is one of several U.S. prisoners who have died of natural causes while on death row.
More than half of all U.S. prisoners sentenced to death spend more than 18 years awaiting execution, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.
The state Supreme Court said over the summer that the progression of Menzies’ disease raised a significant concern about his fitness to be executed. A state medical professional agreed in a mental competency report published this month that Menzies lacked a rational understanding of why he was facing execution.

Ralph Leroy Menzies appears in Third District Court for a competency hearing in West Jordan, Utah, Nov 18, 2024.
Those findings came after a state judge ruled he was competent enough to be executed, saying in June that Menzies “consistently and rationally understands” what is happening and why he is facing execution despite his recent cognitive decline, and that his execution would not violate the Eighth Amendment, which prohibits cruel and unusual punishments.
Utah Attorney General Derek Brown said he hopes the victim’s family will finally have some closure and peace after Menzies’ death.
“For decades, the state of Utah has pursued justice on her behalf. The path has been long and filled with pain, far more than any victim’s family should ever have to endure,” Brown said.
Menzies abducted Hunsaker from a convenience store where she worked on Feb. 23, 1986, just days after he was released on bail for an unrelated crime. She later called her husband to tell him she had been robbed and kidnapped, but that her abductor planned to release her.
Days later, a hiker found her body at a picnic area about 16 miles away in Big Cottonwood Canyon. She was strangled and had her throat cut.
When he was later jailed on unrelated matters, Menzies had Hunsaker’s wallet and several other items that belonged to her. Police also said Hunsaker’s thumbprint was found in a car that Menzies was driving, and her purse was discovered in his apartment.

Menzies was convicted of first-degree murder and other crimes.
“We’re grateful that Ralph passed naturally and maintained his spiritedness and dignity until the end,” Menzies’ legal team said in a statement.
Menzies selected the firing squad as his method of execution and would have become only the seventh U.S. prisoner executed by firing squad since the U.S. reinstated the death penalty in 1977 — three in Utah, with the last one in the state carried out in 2010, and three in South Carolina this year.
Utah’s last execution of any method was carried out by lethal injection over a year ago.

Keir Starmer Slams Trump’s NATO Remarks as “Insulting and Appalling”
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has strongly criticized remarks by US President Donald Trump that appeared to dismiss the contributions and sacrifices of NATO allies during the Afghanistan war. Speaking to Fox News in Davos, Trump suggested NATO troops “stayed a little back, a little off the front lines” and claimed the US “never needed” its allies. Starmer described the comments as “insulting and frankly appalling,” emphasizing the courage and sacrifice of British and allied troops. Prince Harry and former US diplomat Nicholas Burns also condemned Trump’s statements, which have sparked widespread backlash among European leaders.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
Key Points:
The remarks risk straining transatlantic relations and undermining the solidarity of the NATO alliance, especially ahead of future security collaborations.
They disrespect the documented sacrifices of thousands of NATO troops from multiple countries who served, were injured, or died in Afghanistan.
The backlash reflects broader European concerns about the reliability and diplomatic approach of US leadership under Trump’s administration.
Such statements may influence public and political perceptions of the US commitment to multilateral defense partnerships.
The timing, amid ongoing global security challenges, highlights tensions in how military contributions and alliances are acknowledged and valued.
The controversy is likely to fuel diplomatic discussions on alliance solidarity and the public recognition of collective military sacrifices.

North Korea Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un pictured grinning in ‘North Korean Benidorm’ as he enters women’s pool
North Korean despot Kim Jong-un has been seen grinning as he peers over a women’s spa pool bizarre new photographs.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
The Supreme Leader turned up at the official opening of the Onpo Workers’ Recreation Centre in North Hamgyong Province yesterday afternoon – a newly-reopened resort previously described as the ‘North Korean Benidorm’. After a ribbon cutting ceremony, Kim kept his large winter coat on for all the photos, even when he was inside the warm spa building – but appeared to be thrilled at what he was seeing.
The hot spring spa was entirely remodelled after coming in for harsh criticism from Kim Jong-un back in 2018, when he singled it out for poor management and ‘shabby’ facilities. Speaking at the opening ceremony yesterday, he said: “Every section is arranged practically and harmoniously, with all architectural elements designed to blend with the surrounding natural environment.
“I remember when I visited here a few years ago… and severely criticised the uncultured and unhygienic management practices… Seeing this holiday camp, now rebuilt as an excellent rest facility for the people, fills me with pride that we have accomplished another meaningful task.”
During an inspection of the site in 2018, Kim Jong-un strongly criticised operations, saying the site was “worse than a fish tank” and “really shabby”. After his most recent visit, he ordered resort officials to prepare to open, giving instructions that the site should be fully opened next month.
Spa trips are being offered to members of North Korea’s ruling class along with foreign tourists from China and sanctions-hit Russia, with prices ranging between $1,000 (£743) to $1,350 (£1,000) for a week-long tour, excluding flights.

Meet Veronika, the cow that went viral for scratching herself with sticks and stunned scientists

Veronika, a Swiss Brown cow, has challenged long-held assumptions about farm animals after researchers saw her using tools to scratch hard-to-reach parts of her body, a behaviour scientists say is rare.
For nearly a decade, Veronika, living on a farm in the small Austrian town of Notsch im Gailtal, has been observed picking up sticks with her mouth and skillfully using them to scratch her back and other parts of her body. When animal behaviour experts at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna recently reviewed videos of her actions, they realised they were witnessing something extraordinary, CNN reported.
The findings have been published in the journal Current Biology, marking what researchers say is the first documented case of tool use in a pet cow.
“What this tells us is that cows have the potential to innovate tool use, and we have ignored this fact for thousands of years,” lead author Antonio J Osuna-Mascaro, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Veterinary Medicine, wrote in an email to CNN. “There are around 1.5 billion heads of cattle in the world, and humans have lived with them for at least 10,000 years. It’s shocking that we’re only discovering this now.”

According to the research team, Veronika’s behaviour goes beyond accidental interaction with objects. “When we first saw the video, it was clear that the behaviour was intentional and not accidental,” Osuna-Mascaro said.
Further, researchers conducted controlled experiments by placing a deck brush in front of Veronika in different orientations to better understand her abilities. They observed how she used her tongue to pick up the brush, which end she chose, and which parts of her body she targeted, the report added.
The results showed that Veronika not only used tools deliberately but also demonstrated her ability to make decisions. She preferred the bristled end of the brush for rubbing thicker skin on her upper body, while using the blunt handle for more sensitive areas, such as her udder.
“This is extremely surprising because the only other solid example of multipurpose tool use that we know of belongs to the chimpanzees of the Congo Basin,” Osuna-Mascaro said in the email. “These, sometimes, are observed using a single tool with two different ends, and use one end to open a hole in the termite mounds, and the other end to fish for the termites.”

He added, “The spatial relations in Veronika’s case are simpler. Nevertheless, it’s astonishing to find that a cow has the capability to do something like this.”
Despite lacking hands or opposable thumbs, Veronika displayed impressive control using her mouth. Researchers noted that she adjusted her grip depending on which end of the brush she needed, the body part she was scratching, and the kind of motion required, the report stated.
The study suggests that the cognitive abilities of cattle, and possibly other farm animals, may be far more advanced than previously believed. Researchers hope the discovery will encourage further observation and study of livestock behaviour, potentially reshaping how humans understand and treat animals that have lived alongside them.
