Google has released its 2025 Year in Search report, offering a detailed look at the events, personalities, entertainment, and cultural moments that shaped the curiosity of Nigerians throughout the year.

The data, published on Thursday, reflects how Nigerians turned to Google to track major political developments, pay tribute to national icons, decode viral slang, and explore emerging food and lifestyle trends.

Political conversation featured prominently on Search in 2025. Senator Natasha Akpoti was the most searched Nigerian personality, underscoring heightened political engagement during the year...TAP TO CONTINUE FULL READING.

Global news events also sparked significant interest, with the Israel–Iran conflict and the U.S. elections ranking among the top trending topics.

Nigerians also searched widely following the deaths of prominent figures including former President Muhammadu Buhari, Super Eagles legend Peter Rufai, and Pope Francis.

Entertainment searches were driven largely by Nigerian music and cinema. ‘Oluwatosin (Jesus Is Enough)’ by Tkeyz featuring Steve Hills was the most searched song of the year, followed by Fido’s ‘Joy Is Coming’ and Davido and Omah Lay’s collaboration ‘With You’.

In film and series, local productions led the trends. Kemi Adetiba appeared among the most searched personalities, boosted by the success of To Kill a Monkey, which ranked as Nigeria’s top trending local series in 2025.

The cultural impact of online trends was evident in the year’s top questions. The query “What is Labubu?” topped the list as Nigerians sought to understand the viral character that swept social media. Searches for the meaning of “Achalugo,” popularised by the YouTube film Love in Every Word, also surged.

Food-related searches blended tradition with experimentation. Nigerians looked up recipes ranging from chinchin and sausage rolls to Ginger Shots, Pornstar Martini, and global favourites such as hummus and lasagna.

“The 2025 Year in Search is more than just data; it’s a vibrant, unfiltered mirror of our collective attention,” said Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications & Public Affairs Manager for West Africa. “These lists show how Nigerians are using Search to actively engage with the world around them.”

The full 2025 Year in Search list for Nigeria is available on the Google Trends portal.

New CBN BVN Rules: 5 Things Nigerians Must Know From May 1

Published

on

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has introduced new Bank Verification Number (BVN) rules effective from May 1, 2026, aimed at reducing fraud, especially SIM swap and identity theft cases. The regulations include stricter controls on phone number changes, age restrictions, device limits, and temporary account restrictions for suspicious activities. Here is a simple breakdown of what you need to know.

One phone number change in a lifetime – Customers can only change the phone number linked to their BVN once. Choose carefully.
24-hour watchlist for suspicious BVNs – Banks can temporarily restrict accounts flagged for suspicious activity while investigations are conducted.
BVN registration is now for adults only – Only individuals aged 18 and above can independently register for a BVN. Minors require guardian-linked arrangements.
One device per banking app – You can only use your banking app on one device at a time. Switching devices triggers a 24-hour transaction limit of N20,000.
Authorised channels only – BVN services are now limited to CBN-approved banks and financial institutions. Avoid third-party apps or unofficial agents.

The new rules may feel strict, but they are designed to protect your money and reduce fraud. Be more careful with your phone number, devices, and banking activities to avoid unnecessary restrictions...TAP TO CONTINUE FULL READING.
