Bayelsa deputy governor, senator consider move to ADC after Gov Diri’s defection to APC

Former Governor Seriake Dickson and Bayelsa deputy governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo are considering leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over rising uncertainty in the party.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING

The planned exit follows concerns about the stability of the opposition platform.

Dickson, who has been openly critical of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Senate, has not followed Governor Douye Diri in defecting to the ruling party. Ewhrudjakpo also refused to join the APC after Diri’s defection on November 3.

Both men are believed to be in talks with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is being considered as a platform for Dickson’s reported bid to return to the Senate and for Ewhrudjakpo’s expected run for governor.

As Dickson ended his second term as governor, he backed Ewhrudjakpo for Senate and later influenced his emergence as Diri’s running mate.

Ewhrudjakpo left the Senate after becoming deputy governor, creating a vacancy which Dickson won in a by-election.

Dickson had earlier warned Diri against defecting to the APC, but the governor ignored the advice.

A source in the government house told The Nation that the rumoured defection of Dickson and Ewhrudjakpo has “some element of truth”.

The source said Dickson has political links to the ADC and has allegedly influenced some appointments in the party’s state structure.

He said Dickson may defect along with Ewhrudjakpo, who served as his works commissioner during his administration.

He, however, argued that the ADC “cannot win one local government area” in Bayelsa due to its low acceptance.

He said his preference would be for Dickson to join the governor in the APC, adding that “anybody going to the ADC is on his own”.

Another source said Dickson’s chances of securing a third term in the Senate under the PDP remain uncertain, making the ADC a possible alternative.

He said the former governor has the political structure and resources to win an election in his district even on a smaller platform.

The Rivers State House of Assembly, on Thursday, held a press conference wherein it debunked the false narrative being bandied about that the Governor has not met with the members of the House since the lifting of the emergency rule because the political leader of the State, who is the FCT Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike has not called for a meeting between the Governor and the House Members.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule made the debunk while addressing the media to correct the wrong narrative, and to straighten what he called the bare-faced lies spewed by Gov. Siminialayi Fubara in his recent outing.

The Speaker referenced the speech of the Governor where he alluded that his inability to meet with the Members of the House was predicated on the refusal of the FCT Minister to call for such a meeting.

Rt. Hon. Amaewhule stated that shortly after the termination of the emergency rule in the State, there was a meeting between some principal officers and the Governor including some stakeholders. He went further to say that about three of such meetings have been facilitated by Minister Wike but Gov. Fubara has refused to implement any of the resolutions reached in all the meetings.

The Speaker wondered how many meetings would be enough for the Governor to act responsibly; adding that the Governor’s outburst during a project commissioning on Wednesday was condemnable and urged the governor to grow up as a leader.

Rt. Hon Amaewhule advised the Governor to be more mature in dealing with the resources of the State, stressing that his tantrums against Minister Wike will not help him in any way.

The Speaker reiterated the commitment of the House irrespective of party affiliation to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Fubara sent his attack dogs against us, he is failing – Rivers Speaker, Amaewhule....TAP TO CONTINUE READING

The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, has chided the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, describing him as a failed leader.

Amaewhule made the remark on Thursday at a press conference in Port Harcourt while addressing the governor’s recent outbursts.

Fubara, who spoke at an event on Wednesday, claimed that he had made efforts to meet with the lawmakers but was waiting for party leaders to convene the agreed reconciliation meeting.

His comment followed the renewed face-off between him and members of the Assembly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Addressing the governor’s claims, Amaewhule told journalists that there has been a series of meetings with the governor, alleging that the governor is deliberately undermining the Assembly.

He accused the governor of sending attack dogs to insult members of the Assembly on social media and radio stations.

The Speaker said, “At the moment, the governor is failing; he doesn’t want to be a leader. A leader would want to bring people together and make peace.

“The outburst yesterday doesn’t show leadership at all. Disparaging the FCT Minister is not leadership at all. Sending his attack dogs, all those his media thugs, to insult us on social media is not helping the governor.

“All those things are not in the best interest of Rivers State people.”
