BREAKING NEWS: Fresh Prices Of Filling Cooking Gas Per KG As Supply Improves

Published

on

There is growing cautious optimism among retailers and consumers of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as the product becomes more readily available across parts of the country, with prices currently selling between ₦1,000 and ₦1,400 per kilogramme, depending on location and seller.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING

A market survey by The PUNCH showed that cooking gas supply improved towards the end of 2025, in contrast to the acute scarcity recorded in September and October last year.

Consumers in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and other states confirmed that they purchased LPG at prices ranging from ₦1,050 to ₦1,400 per kg, while some major marketers were found to be selling directly to consumers at about ₦900 per kg.

For many consumers, the current pricing represents a significant improvement compared with the sharp spikes recorded in late 2025, when prices reportedly surged to as high as ₦2,000 per kg in some locations.

The hike followed a rift between the Dangote Refinery and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), which resulted in a shutdown of gas facilities in September and October.

Despite the easing prices, many households said they were still hopeful that LPG prices would drop below ₦1,000 per kg in the new year, noting that affordability is key to encouraging the use of clean cooking energy.

Speaking with our correspondent, the National Chairman of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Retailers branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Ayobami Olarinoye, said the LPG market had become relatively stabilised.

According to him, some offtakers are now receiving gas supplies at Apapa in Lagos, improving distribution.

“The LPG market is relatively stabilised. Some off-takers have gas now in Apapa,” Olarinoye said.

He explained that retail prices vary depending on neighbourhoods and logistics, with street retailers selling between ₦1,300 and ₦1,400 per kg.

“It depends on the area and cost of logistics; it may be cheaper at fuel stations and gas plants. I am speaking for retailers,” he added.

Olarinoye disclosed that retailers currently purchase LPG from major marketers at prices ranging between ₦960 and ₦1,050 per kg, noting that sellers offering prices below ₦1,000 are usually plant owners who sell directly to consumers.

“As retailers, we currently buy between ₦960 and ₦1,050 depending on the individual company.

“Those selling below ₦1,000 per kg may be some of those plants that do not sell to distributors or retailers. They sell directly to end users,” he said.

The Dangote Refinery had previously promised to crash LPG prices by selling cooking gas directly to consumers, a move many stakeholders believe could further stabilise prices if implemented.

The Federal High Court granted the trio bail on Wednesday, ordering that each release bond be set at ₦500 million with two sureties each who must own verified landed property in highbrow areas of the Federal Capital Territory.

The sureties are also required to swear affidavits of means and provide other documentation as part of bail compliance. The court further directed that their international passports be deposited with the registry and prohibited them from travelling abroad without permission.
