Naija News reports that Ojukwu, who is standing trial alongside Adedapo Quadri and her sister, Chioma Egbuchu, made the statement while responding to questions under cross-examination.

“I regret that he died,” she told the court.

The prosecutor, Y. Sule, had confronted her with allegations that she was the last person with Ataga before he was found dead at a short-let apartment in Lagos in June 2021.

But Ojukwu insisted she was not the last person who saw him alive and denied fleeing the apartment with his gadgets.

Sule further questioned her on the phones and MacBook recovered at the time of her arrest, asking whether she understood how such devices operate.

He then tendered two receipts from Phone Hub allegedly showing her transactions, including the sale of a MacBook Pro for N495,000, which she admitted receiving in her Sterling Bank account.

Ojukwu, however, denied knowledge of the receipts but admitted visiting the shop to sell the laptop.

Her counsel, Onwuka Egwu, objected to the admissibility of the documents, but Justice Yetunde Adesanya overruled the objection and admitted them as evidence.

The prosecutor asked if the sale occurred after Ataga’s death. Ojukwu replied that the transaction took place “days after” she left the short-let apartment.

She also admitted that her personal details appeared on the phone recovered from her and that she had continued using the device after Ataga died.

When asked if the MacBook was a birthday present and whether she had its receipt, she confirmed both, saying the giver handed her the receipt.

During re-examination, her counsel questioned her educational background.
She stated she was a 300-level Mass Communication student before her arrest and had no IT expertise.

Justice Adesanya adjourned the matter to February 9, 2026, for continuation of trial.

The defence has indicated it will call four witnesses, while the prosecution has so far called 10 witnesses in the five-year-old murder trial.

Recall that Ataga’s body was found in a pool of blood inside a Lekki short-let apartment in 2021.
