WARNING: DISTRESSING CONTENT Devyn Michaels, 47, was found guilty of first-degree murder following a two-week trial in Las Vegas after her ex-husband Jonathan Willette’s headless body was discovered.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING

Devyn Michaels was detained in 2023 after the discovery of her 46 year old husband Jonathan Willette’s body.

A jury has found a former adult film star guilty of murdering her ex-husband before going on to marry his son, following a lengthy court case.

Devyn Michaels, 47, was convicted of first-degree murder last month after a fortnight-long trial in which prosecutors and defence barristers presented vastly different versions of events to the 14-person jury.

Prosecutors John Giordani and Brittni Griffith contended that Michaels held a grudge against Willette after he won sole custody of their two children. Michaels’ defence team tried to suggest Willette’s son as a possible suspect, but failed to provide any corroborating evidence, with no CCTV footage or telephone records linking him to the scene.

Michaels was detained in 2023 after the discovery of her 46 year old husband Jonathan Willette’s decapitated body, which showed severe injuries from chemical burns, at his Las Vegas home on 6 August 2023. Detectives suspected Michaels had dumped Willette’s head in a rubbish bin in her northwest valley neighbourhood, reports The Mirror.

Whilst showing disturbing crime scene images to jurors, including photographs of Willette’s headless body, Giordani cautioned, “And all I can say is, ‘Buckle up, because you’re in for a wild ride.”, reports the Express US.

Griffith further argued that Willette was planning to move away with Michaels and his son, but she wanted her ex-husband out of the picture. “And the truth is, the walls were closing in on Devyn Michaels and the fantasy that she had put together,” Griffith told the jury.

Prosecutors revealed Michaels and Willette wed in 2012 before divorcing in 2018. Michaels subsequently married Willette’s 29 year old son, Deviere Willette, though she characterised both unions as marriages of convenience, according to testimony.

Deviere Willette, the victim’s son, testified to the jury that he had no part in his father’s killing. Prosecutors presented a video during Thursday’s testimony showing Michaels telling police she was giving her ex-husband a massage in his bedroom when she struck him with what she described as “candlestick-like.

“He didn’t say anything. He stopped moving,” Michaels told the detectives in that interview. Clark County District Court Judge Tierra Jones heard evidence from a Henderson police detective regarding his interviews with Michaels.

Henderson police detective Dennis Ozawa revealed that during one interview, the former adult film star told him she placed Willette’s head in a laundry basket and disposed of it in a bin in her northwest valley home neighbourhood. Neither the murder weapon nor Willette’s head have been found.

Her legal team consistently argued that Michaels lacked the physical capability to decapitate someone of Willette’s build, emphasising that nobody witnessed or heard the killing take place.

“Where’s the testimony of a powered saw?” Michaels’ solicitor, Robert Draskovich, questioned the jury during his closing remarks. “We don’t know when that happened. She didn’t do it.”

Prior to trial, Michaels had admitted guilt to second-degree murder, which would have allowed her to apply for parole after 15 years behind bars. She subsequently attempted to withdraw her plea, but Jones ruled that Michaels had entered it “voluntarily, knowingly and intelligently,” according to court documents.

The former adult film actress, who has also gone by the names Nikki Fairchild and Tracee Taverz, offered an apology before immediately declaring her innocence, which led the case to proceed to trial.

Donald Trump has warned there will be “very serious retaliation” after two US soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed in an attack in Syria.

US Central Command said three Americans were killed and three other service members injured in what it described as an “ambush by a lone ISIS gunman”, who was then “engaged and killed”.

The US president also blamed the attack on the Islamic State (IS) militant group, writing in a post on Truth Social: “This was an ISIS attack against the U.S., and Syria, in a very dangerous part of Syria, that is not fully controlled by them. The President of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is extremely angry and disturbed by this attack. There will be very serious retaliation.”

The attack took place in Palmyra, where troops were “conducting a key leader engagement”, according to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell. A defence official said that it happened in an “area where the Syrian president does not have control”.

Two Syrian service members were also injured, Syria’s state news reported. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack and the gunman’s identity has not been released. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attacker was a member of the Syrian security force.

US Central Command said the identities of those killed were being withheld until their next of kin had been informed.

Tom Barrack, the US ambassador to Turkey and special envoy for Syria, said: “I strongly condemn the cowardly terrorist ambush targeting a joint US–Syrian government patrol in central Syria. We remain committed to defeating terrorism with our Syrian partners.”

US War Secretary Pete Hegseth said: “Let it be known, if you target Americans – anywhere in the world you will spend the rest of your brief, anxious life knowing the United States will hunt you, find you, and ruthlessly kill you.”

It comes just weeks after President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Donald Trump met at the White House, a visit the Syrian leader hailed as the start of a “new era” in the two countries’ relations. Shortly afterwards, Syria announced it would join a global coalition to dismantle the remaining elements of IS.

While IS was defeated territorially in Syria in 2019, the UN estimates between 5,000 and 7,000 of its fighters remain active across Syria and Iraq, continuing to carry out deadly attacks.

BREAKING NEWS: Burkina Faso Refuses to Release Nigerian Military Aircraft, 11 Soldiers as FG Steps in

Published

on

Burkina Faso has continued to hold on to a Nigerian military aircraft and the 11 personnel on board, despite repeated diplomatic efforts to resolve the matter.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING

The Federal Government has now stepped in fully as tension around the incident continues to grow.

The aircraft, a Nigerian Air Force C-130, had landed in Bobo Dioulasso after the crew detected a technical issue.

While the Nigerian side insists the landing followed international aviation safety rules, Burkina Faso authorities maintain that the plane entered their airspace without proper approval.

The disagreement quickly escalated, drawing in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which has opened talks with officials in Ouagadougou to secure the release of both the aircraft and the personnel.

According to officials familiar with the discussions, the situation has become more complicated because of political tensions in the region.

They explained that the members of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) — Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger — see the incident as a chance to display defiance towards Nigeria after the three countries withdrew from ECOWAS.

Diplomatic sources told POLITICS NIGERIA that the C-130 crew followed the proper procedure for an emergency landing, but the ongoing friction between the Sahel military governments and Abuja has made a straightforward process more difficult.

One senior official confirmed that negotiations are active. He explained that the aircraft had been expected to continue its journey to Portugal almost immediately, but Burkina Faso has not given the clearance needed.

When asked for an update, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that reports claiming the aircraft and personnel had been freed were untrue. The ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, noted that government channels are still working to secure their release.

He stated: “They have not been released as we speak, but we are trying to secure that. We are engaging the Burkina Faso authorities using usual diplomatic channels.”

Ebienfa also said the ministry is unaware of the exact reason behind Burkina Faso’s refusal to clear the aircraft, but assured Nigerians that efforts are ongoing to bring the detained personnel home safely.

Earlier, the Nigerian Air Force confirmed the emergency landing and noted that the crew had been treated courteously. The NAF said it hoped to resume the flight as soon as possible.

In its statement, the Air Force said: “Following take-off from Lagos, the crew observed a technical concern which necessitated a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, the nearest airfield, in accordance with standard safety procedures and international aviation protocols. The NAF crew is safe and has received cordial treatment from the host authorities.
Plans are ongoing to resume the mission as scheduled.”

However, that plan has stalled as the Burkinabe authorities continue to hold the aircraft, insisting it flew into their territory without the required clearance.

Reports from Burkina Faso indicate that the plane carried 11 Nigerian military personnel — two crew members and nine passengers when it made the emergency landing.

Officials from the Sahel bloc have described the incident as a violation of their sovereignty and warned that any similar occurrence would be met with force.

They also claimed that their air-defence systems were already on high alert following the episode, stressing that they would not tolerate what they termed unauthorised intrusion.
