Some concerned stakeholders in Edo State have raised the alarm over what they describe as the “dangerous and destabilising” leadership style of Mr. Ephraim O. S. Aluebhosele, recently appointed as the Board Chairman of the Edo State College of Education, Igueben, by Governor Monday Okpebholo.

In a petition made available to SaharaReporters on Wednesday, the stakeholders alleged that Aluebhosele, a close ally of Governor Okpebholo, has taken actions that threaten the very survival of the institution.

According to the petitioners, Aluebhosele allegedly ordered contractors to abandon critical projects in the college and instructed the Provost to halt engagements necessary for the school’s smooth operations.

They described the move as “a reckless disregard for the academic calendar and institutional priorities.”

The group also accused him of removing the Acting Provost without due process, saying the action was carried out without the required query, warning, or disciplinary procedure – a violation of established norms guiding academic leadership transitions.

“Perhaps most controversially, Aluebhosele was accused of promoting an Esan government agenda,” one of the sources said.

The petitioners claimed he forced the appointment of a junior staff member over more qualified senior officials, an act they say has disrupted the institutional hierarchy and inflamed ethnic sentiments on campus.

They further questioned whether the Edo State government is aware of the chairman’s sweeping unilateral decisions.

“It is doubtful if Governor Monday Okpebholo sanctioned these acts. What we are seeing is unchecked power that undermines accountability in public service,” the group said.

The petition warned that unless the government urgently intervenes, the college risks total collapse.

“Higher institutions of learning are supposed to be guided by meritocracy, participatory governance, and fairness. What we are witnessing instead is an environment poisoned by ethnic politics and lawless decision-making,” the stakeholders declared.

They stressed that beyond the immediate crisis at Igueben, the situation has wider implications for Nigeria’s education system and governance standards.

Key Allegations Against Aluebhosele include; “Disruption of operations: He ordered contractors to stop work and restricted the Provost from critical engagements; Irregular removal of Acting Provost: Ousted through a letter without due disciplinary procedure.

“Ethnic bias: Promoted an “Esan Government” posture, elevating a junior staff member over senior, more qualified officials and Unchecked authority: Allegedly making unilateral decisions without the knowledge or approval of the Edo State Government.

The petition concluded with a call on Governor Okpebholo and relevant stakeholders to urgently investigate and restore stability.

“The Edo State College of Education, Igueben – like all citadels of learning – requires leadership attuned to fostering scholarship, fairness, and intellectual growth. Safeguarding its integrity is essential to Nigeria’s broader educational and developmental aspirations,” they stated.
