FACT-CHECK: Did U.S. airstrike bomb terrorist hideouts in Kaduna, kill Gumi?

Published

A Facebook page claimed that the U.S. fighter jets bombed terrorist hideouts in Kaduna State and reportedly killed controversial Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmed Gumi.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING

The claim started making the rounds on December 15, asserting that “unconfirmed reports emerging from Kaduna State claim that U.S. fighter jets are currently carrying out airstrikes on suspected terrorist hideouts in the state.”

The post featured images of airstrikes supposedly somewhere in the North.

Recall that in November, President of the United States claimed there is an ongoing Christian genocide in Nigeria and threatened military action if the government fail to intervene.

The Nigerian government dismissed the claim by Trump, stating that terrorism is generally affecting all Nigerians.

The development has prompted diplomatic talks between the two countries. However, the claim by the Facebook page has garnered some reactions.
It also has a link to “read the full details”. A review of the comments showed that people have started questioning the veracity of the claim.

Verification:

Ripples Nigeria starting point is the full news report by the Facebook page. However, the link directed to a betting platform. This is typical of Facebook pages spreading malicious contents.

Further checks on the images also revealed that the post is false.

Using Google Image verification tool, Ripples Nigeria found that two of the images captures an Israeli airstrike on the Gaza Strip.
Images of Israeli strikes in Gaza Strip and a F/A-18 Hornet or Super Hornet aircraft in flight falsely used to claim U.S. airstrike bombs terrorist hideouts in Kaduna State, Nigeria.

The third image shows a F/A-18 Hornet or Super Hornet aircraft in flight. The F/A-18 is a combat-proven, multirole fighter used by the U.S. Navy and other international partners, designed for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.

Also, no mainstream media in Nigeria and US reported any U.S. airstrike in Kaduna State. There is also no report of the death of Gumi.

Ripples Nigeria reports that the Facebook page commonly shared many posts to its thousand of followers, many of which have been fact-checked to be false or misleading.

Conclusion:

The Facebook post that the U.S. conducted airstrikes on terrorist hideouts in Kaduna State, killing Gumi in the process is false.
