Instead of risking further damage, experts recommend following four immediate steps to give your device the best chance of surviving water exposure.
These steps are safer, faster, and much more effective in preventing permanent component failure.
1. Switch Off the Phone Immediately and Cut the Power
This is the single most crucial step you can take. Leaving the phone on—or trying to power it on to “check” if it works—can cause instant short circuits, especially when water reaches the motherboard. Turning the device off stops all electrical activity and drastically reduces the chances of critical component failure.
2. Remove All Accessible External Parts
Water gets trapped easily! You must immediately and gently remove the SIM card, memory card (SD card), and the case. If your specific phone model allows for it, also remove the battery. Removing these parts opens up ports and access points, helping the water begin to evaporate and preventing moisture from being trapped against sensitive circuits.
3. Gently Wipe and Use Suction, Never Blow Heat
Use a soft, dry, absorbent cloth (like a microfiber towel) to blot the exterior of the device. Avoid shaking the phone or blowing into its ports (even with a cool setting), as this can push water deeper into the phone’s interior. A better option is to use the crevice tool of a household vacuum cleaner to gently suction water out of the charging ports and headphone jack.
4. Place in a Desiccant Environment for 48–72 Hours
The phone must be allowed to dry completely using a material that draws out moisture (a desiccant). Place the phone in an airtight container completely surrounded by silica gel packets (found in new shoe boxes) or, as a less effective but available alternative, uncooked rice. Leave the device in this dry environment for at least 48 to 72 hours without attempting to power it on, ensuring all internal moisture is safely drawn out.
Following these four steps increases the chance of saving your device. Being calm and acting quickly, prioritizing power-down and slow drying, can make the difference between a working phone and a costly replacement.
