He said for his display and his ability to keep Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal quiet throughout the game, the former Brighton man has shown he is a serious player.

He said the Spain international produced the best performance he had seen from a left-back in a ‘long, long time’.

Chelsea moved to 5th place in the Champions League following the victory over the LaLiga champions.

Chelsea took the lead through a 55th minute own goal scored by Jules Kounde.

Estevao made it 2-0 for Chelsea after he danced past Pau Cubarsi on the edge of the box before arrowing the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Liam Delap came from the bench to add a third to put the game to bed with 17 minutes remaining of normal time.

Speaking on Amazon Prime, Rooney hailed the Chelsea and Spain left-back, saying, “Estevao has probably given Cucurella the best lessons in training that he could have in dealing with Lamine Yamal.

“Cucurella was absolutely incredible. I think it’s probably the best performance I’ve seen from a left-back for a long, long time.

“To do that tonight, what he did, he’s a serious player.”

Gianluca Scamacca’s header levelled the game, before Charles De Ketelaere smashed in the winner in the 83rd minute.

“After we conceded the first goal, we lost control a little bit of the game,” Maresca told TNT Sports.

“We are playing every two days, two days, two days. For a moment we looked like we struggled a bit.

“We were aggressive like them. We had different chances to make it 2-0 and when we conceded 1-1 the dynamic of the game changed a little bit.”

Chelsea now have 10 points from six games, two points behind eighth-placed Liverpool.

The Blues welcome Everton to Stamford Bridge next in the Premier League this weekend.
