2 Civilian Protection Group CPG Members Murdered, 1 Critically Injured in Fresh Zamfara Bandit Ambush

Published

on

Armed bandits on Saturday evening ambushed and killed two members of the Civilian Protection Group (CPG), a local vigilante outfit, while seriously injuring a third in Dansadau Emirate of Maru Local Government Area, Zamfara State.

The deadly attack occurred around 5:00 p.m. along the Dantudu–Dansadau road as the three CPG volunteers were returning from a routine patrol.

Eyewitnesses told journalists that the bandits, who had laid in wait along the bush path, opened fire on the victims’ motorcycle the moment they rode into the ambush spot...TAP TO CONTINUE FULL READING.

Two of the vigilantes died instantly from multiple gunshot wounds, while the third, identified as Kamal Yaron Malam, sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Dansadau General Hospital.

The bodies of the deceased were later recovered and deposited at the same hospital for autopsy before being released to their families for burial according to Islamic rites.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but sources in the area blamed Lakurawa bandits who have intensified attacks on security operatives and civilians in the Dansadau axis in recent weeks.

Residents of Dansadau town and surrounding villages expressed outrage and fear, saying the killing of CPG members (who have been at the forefront of defending communities) has further emboldened the terrorists.

“These boys risked their lives daily to protect us, yet they were gunned down in broad daylight. If the people protecting us are no longer safe, then nobody is safe,” a visibly shaken resident told reporters on Sunday morning.

Zamfara State Police Command spokesman, ASP Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the incident, stating that tactical units have been deployed to the area to track the perpetrators.

“The command is deeply saddened by this cowardly attack on community volunteers who have been helping us restore peace. We will not rest until the culprits are brought to justice,” Abubakar said.

The latest killings bring to at least seven the number of CPG and community vigilante members killed by bandits in Zamfara in the past one month, underscoring the worsening security situation in the North-West state despite ongoing military operations.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has introduced new Bank Verification Number (BVN) rules effective from May 1, 2026, aimed at reducing fraud, especially SIM swap and identity theft cases. The regulations include stricter controls on phone number changes, age restrictions, device limits, and temporary account restrictions for suspicious activities. Here is a simple breakdown of what you need to know.

24-hour watchlist for suspicious BVNs – Banks can temporarily restrict accounts flagged for suspicious activity while investigations are conducted.
BVN registration is now for adults only – Only individuals aged 18 and above can independently register for a BVN. Minors require guardian-linked arrangements.
One device per banking app – You can only use your banking app on one device at a time. Switching devices triggers a 24-hour transaction limit of N20,000.
Authorised channels only – BVN services are now limited to CBN-approved banks and financial institutions. Avoid third-party apps or unofficial agents.
