Sokoto Governor Says Drug abuse fuels 80% of insecurity, Urges Collective Action against menace

Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has stated that drug abuse is responsible for about 80 per cent of the security challenges confronting the state. Speaking at a public lecture marking the UN International Day Against Drug Abuse, Aliyu said widespread use of hard drugs has contributed significantly to banditry and other violent crimes.

He noted that many perpetrators commit atrocities while under the influence of narcotics. The governor urged youths to shun drugs and announced the establishment of an office to coordinate awareness campaigns.
