Mr Ibu’s Widow Defends Sale of His Land in Enugu

According to a report by Premium Times on Friday, June 26, 2026, Stellamaris Okafor, the widow of late Nollywood comic actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, has addressed allegations surrounding the sale of one of her late husband’s properties, insisting that the transaction was carried out to finance his burial.

Her response follows claims made by Somtochukwu Okafor, one of Mr Ibu’s sons, who accused her of disposing of some of the actor’s assets and mismanaging funds reportedly donated for his medical treatment before his death.

The allegations surfaced shortly after Stellamaris and her children appeared in an interview with content creator King Mitchy, where they appealed to Nigerians for financial support, citing financial difficulties affecting the family.

Reacting to the accusations in a video shared on King Mitchy’s Instagram page on Friday, Stellamaris rejected the allegations and provided her account of the events surrounding the sale of the property.

According to her, disagreements within the family began shortly after Mr Ibu’s burial, particularly over money that was reportedly given to her during the funeral.

She explained that some members of the family wanted the money shared among them, but she maintained that the funds were meant for the welfare of her children.

Stellamaris disclosed that the amount in question was ₦500,000, adding that it became a source of disagreement after the burial ceremonies.

Speaking on the sale of a parcel of land located in Enugu State, she said the decision was jointly taken by three individuals and that the proceeds were used to cover the expenses associated with Mr Ibu’s funeral.

According to her, the property was sold for ₦17 million, and the money was channelled towards the burial arrangements. She insisted that other members of the family were aware of how the funds were utilised.

The widow also stated that during her marriage to the late actor, he never informed her that he had previously been married or that he had children from earlier relationships.

She explained that although some of the children were present in their family home over the years, her husband never introduced them to her as his biological children. She added that she only became aware of certain aspects of his family history after their marriage.

Meanwhile, content creator King Mitchy disclosed that her public appeal on behalf of Mr Ibu’s family attracted overwhelming support from Nigerians.

She announced that a total of ₦7.5 million had been raised through donations to assist the family with immediate financial needs.

According to her, the funds will be used to settle outstanding school fees for the children, including the eldest daughter’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) registration, as well as outstanding rent.

King Mitchy also revealed that after discussing the family’s financial situation with Stellamaris, she advised her to relocate to a more affordable apartment to reduce future living expenses.

She noted that she had no previous relationship with the family and only became involved after receiving a call from a concerned neighbour who informed her of their condition.

Expressing appreciation to everyone who contributed, King Mitchy said the donations would provide much-needed relief for the family as they work towards rebuilding their lives.

Mr Ibu passed away on March 2, 2024, at Evercare Hospital in Lekki, Lagos, at the age of 62 after suffering a cardiac arrest. The celebrated actor was laid to rest on June 28, 2024, in his hometown of Amuri, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
