President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday, July 2, 2026, commissioned Africa’s largest lithium processing facility, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s drive to become a global player in the clean energy and battery minerals value chain.
The $250 million plant, built by Chinese firm Diamond New Energy in partnership with the Nasarawa State Government, is located at the Endo Industrial Hub in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
Designed to process 6,000 metric tonnes of lithium daily equivalent to about 3 million tonnes annually the facility is expected to significantly boost local mineral beneficiation, create jobs, and attract further investment into Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
The project was developed in collaboration with Chinese companies Jiuling and Canmax, whose combined production capacity accounts for more than 20 percent of the global lithium market.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the commissioning ceremony, President Tinubu described the project as a clear signal that Nigeria is moving beyond the export of raw minerals to local processing, value addition, and industrial development.
He said the new facility reflects the administration’s commitment to building a diversified economy by unlocking the full potential of the country’s mineral resources.
