African Democratic Congress (ADC): Ruling govt plans to hold El-Rufai until after 2027 elections to weaken opposition

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that the Federal Government is deliberately detaining former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai and has no intention of releasing him until after the 2027 general election.

ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi said the continued detention is intended to weaken the opposition, adding that bail conditions are “almost impossible” to meet, suggesting the government intends “to hold this person in perpetuity.” He claimed: “The thinking within the ADC is that the APC government has concluded that they will not release Malam Nasir el-Rufai until after the elections.”

Abdullahi raised concerns over El-Rufai’s health, warning that President Bola Tinubu will be held responsible if anything happens to the former governor, whom he described as a “political prisoner.” El-Rufai faces prosecution by the ICPC and DSS on separate charges.
