Tinubu Holds Security Meeting Amid Outrage Over N100,000 Military Salary

President Bola Tinubu convened a security meeting on Thursday evening at the Presidential Villa, comprising the entire military command, intelligence leadership, and top security advisers.

The meeting comes amid backlash over Defence Minister Christopher Musa’s disclosure that soldiers now earn a minimum monthly salary of N100,000. Veterans and serving personnel described the amount as “grossly inadequate,” with one retired soldier saying: “What is N100,000 with the current situation of the country?”

A retired sergeant questioned whether the figure was even accurate, calling it “ridiculous.” Personnel also accused the President of failing to implement a salary increment he promised nearly four months ago, with one soldier appealing: “During Iftar, the President raised our hopes… he should please make it a reality.”

Key Points:

Veterans and troops say N100,000 is insufficient given the cost of living and risks soldiers face
The government promised a salary increment in March but has not yet implemented it
Personnel say inadequate pay is affecting morale, recruitment, and causing soldiers to go AWOL
Tinubu convened the security meeting amid ongoing counter-terrorism operations
Recent operations have targeted terrorist formations in Zamfara, Katsina, and Borno States

The government faces growing pressure to implement the promised salary increase. Tinubu’s security meeting suggests the administration is reviewing the security situation, but soldiers’ welfare remains a critical concern.
