President Bola Tinubu’s appearance at the Eyo Festival in Lagos State has ignited fresh controversy after photographs from the event showed him wearing a rose-gold Patek Philippe Nautilus luxury wristwatch.
The wristwatch is reportedly worth over $271,000 (about ₦400 million at current exchange rates)...TAP TO CONTINUE FULL READING.
Meanwhile, this opulence is at a time when millions of Nigerians are facing worsening economic hardship and widespread insecurity.
The watch, identified as a Patek Philippe Nautilus Chronograph, reference number 5980/1R-001, is listed on the luxury watch marketplace Chrono24 at a price of €224,900, equivalent to approximately $271,233.
The listing, bearing code Q5W7P4, is located in Madrid, Spain, and indicates a 2022 production year.

According to details on the Chrono24 listing, the timepiece features a rose-gold case and bracelet, runs on an automatic movement (Caliber CH 28-520 C), and offers a 55-hour power reserve with 35 jewels.
The watch is marketed as a men’s/unisex luxury chronograph, placing it among the most expensive wristwatches currently in circulation.
However, photos from the culturally significant Eyo Festival showed President Bola Tinubu dressed in traditional white attire, with a conspicuous luxury watch on his wrist—an accessory that has since become the subject of intense public scrutiny and debate.
President Tinubu’s choice of wristwear at the Eyo Festival shows concerns, as many questioning the optics of wearing an ultra-luxury accessory at a time when Nigerians are grappling with soaring inflation, rising food prices, the removal of fuel subsidies, and deepening economic hardship.
SaharaReporters previously reported that outrage erupted across social media platforms following the circulation of a viral video showing Eyo masquerades assaulting a man during the ongoing 2025 Eyo Festival in Lagos.
The video, which surfaced last week Saturday, shows about four men clad in the traditional white Eyo regalia with red hats repeatedly striking a man with their staves.
As the victim struggled to shield himself from the blows, other masked men were seen rushing toward the scene, apparently to join the assault, while onlookers watched without intervention.
In another video sighted by SaharaReporters on Saturday, a separate confrontation was captured as residents were seen throwing chairs and other objects at a group of Eyo masquerades during a procession.
The clash reportedly occurred when some of the masquerades approached a gate where residents had gathered.

New CBN BVN Rules: 5 Things Nigerians Must Know From May 1

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has introduced new Bank Verification Number (BVN) rules effective from May 1, 2026, aimed at reducing fraud, especially SIM swap and identity theft cases. The regulations include stricter controls on phone number changes, age restrictions, device limits, and temporary account restrictions for suspicious activities. Here is a simple breakdown of what you need to know.

24-hour watchlist for suspicious BVNs – Banks can temporarily restrict accounts flagged for suspicious activity while investigations are conducted.
BVN registration is now for adults only – Only individuals aged 18 and above can independently register for a BVN. Minors require guardian-linked arrangements.
One device per banking app – You can only use your banking app on one device at a time. Switching devices triggers a 24-hour transaction limit of N20,000.
Authorised channels only – BVN services are now limited to CBN-approved banks and financial institutions. Avoid third-party apps or unofficial agents.
The new rules may feel strict, but they are designed to protect your money and reduce fraud. Be more careful with your phone number, devices, and banking activities to avoid unnecessary restrictions...TAP TO CONTINUE FULL READING.
