Tinubu, according to a highly credible source, summoned Wike for a meeting over the Rivers crisis.
The source, who is close to the President, told Saturday PUNCH that the meeting would be held outside the country.
Correspondents also gathered that Fubara flew out of the country on a private jet on Thursday with the plan of meeting Tinubu in France.
Speaking on the fresh impeachment plot against Fubara, the top source disclosed that the President had intervened.
“The President must see the danger in what Wike is doing, though I am aware that he has summoned him to a meeting in Dubai. You know the President is currently out of the country. Barring any last-minute change, they are expected to meet abroad. Wike cannot impeach Fubara; the President will call him to order,” he said.
The source described the FCT minister’s action as an affront to the President.
He maintained that if care was not taken, the move could push Ijaw youths back to the creeks.
“What is happening is outright disrespect to the President by Wike, and it is against national interest. One of the reasons a state of emergency was declared in Rivers in March last year was the fear of a breakdown of law and order and the attendant consequences for oil production.
“If you say you want to sack the first Ijaw man to be governor, are you not sending the Ijaw people back to the creeks? That will have attendant effects on the economy, and the President will not allow that to happen,” the source said.
A senior aide to the President said he was not aware of the meeting with Wike, adding that the President was currently in France from where he would proceed to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The source noted that the FCT minister had no business in the UAE and only an appointment with Tinubu would make him travel there.
“Only Wike or his aides can say if there is any scheduled meeting between him and the President,” the source said.
“When Fubara was moving to the APC, he met with the President, who approved his decision. The President also confirms that governors are the leaders of the party in their states,” the official added.
A senior administrative official at the APC national secretariat said discussions were ongoing on how national leaders of the party would also meet Tinubu upon his arrival in the country.
He said APC leaders were not happy with Wike.
“The discussion here is about how our leaders will meet the President when he returns to the country. They are unhappy that Wike is threatening Fubara like when they were both in the PDP. So, our leaders have concluded plans to see the President on the matter.
“Some of our leaders believe that Wike should have respected the President and the party because Fubara is part of the APC governors. Even if Fubara is not going to contest for a second term, some of our leaders believe he should be allowed to complete his second term,” he added.
Efforts to speak with the minister’s spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, were unsuccessful, as he did not take his calls or respond to messages sent to his phone.
However, an ally of the minister, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the minister would return to Abuja on Sunday.
The ally refused to speak further on Wike’s itinerary after that.
When queried about the meeting with the President, the ally said, “Let’s wait for the day to come. We don’t need to rush things.”
She also absolved the minister of any involvement in the impeachment process against Fubara, saying Rivers lawmakers were behind it.
The ally dismissed the claim that Wike was disrespecting the President by attacking Fubara.
“People accusing the minister of disrespecting the President are mischievous. It is not about the President, and Wike is a number one supporter of Mr President. So, that claim is not correct,” she said.
This comes amid a fresh impeachment process against Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Odu, by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly said to be loyal to Wike.
During plenary presided over by the Speaker of the Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, on Thursday, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, read out the notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Fubara.
The seven points of alleged gross misconduct against Fubara include the demolition of the Assembly Complex, extra-budgetary spending, withholding of funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, and refusal to obey the Supreme Court ruling on the financial autonomy of the House.
Similarly, Odu was accused of reckless and unconstitutional spending of public funds, obstructing the House of Assembly from performing its constitutional duties, and conniving to allow unauthorised persons to occupy offices without proper screening by the Assembly.
Amaewhule said the notice would be served on Fubara within the next seven days and adjourned plenary until January 15.
A member of the APC National Working Committee, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, urged Tinubu to caution Wike and recognise the dangers in his actions.
According to the senior party official, Wike has shown disregard for the President, the APC, and national interest.
“For a minister to instigate actions likely to lead to insecurity and a breakdown of law and order shows a lack of regard for the President and national interest, or a preference for personal ambition,” he said.
“We are already grappling with Nigeria’s reclassification as a Country of Particular Concern by the United States, as well as rising cases of kidnapping and banditry. Adding the Rivers political crisis reflects insensitivity to critical national challenges.
“Stakeholders believe Wike has become an albatross for the President, and they are watching closely to see what step the President will take—whether he will allow Wike to continue riding roughshod over everyone,” he added.
The APC official said Wike’s actions were portraying the President as weak.
“As a minister, what temerity does he have to heat up the polity, tour local governments making inflammatory remarks, and attack personalities across the country, including our national secretary? He abandoned his responsibilities in Abuja and embarked on creating crises in Rivers State.
“I think the President’s advisers must properly brief him on the dangers of Wike’s actions. His posture is affecting even the popularity of the President. Wike is projecting the President as weak and riding roughshod over him,” he stated.
A former senator in the state, Andrew Uchendu, described the lingering crisis as an embarrassment to the people of Rivers.
Uchendu, who represented the Rivers East Senatorial District, made the remark while speaking on a popular Port Harcourt radio station, Nigeria Info.
He said the crisis, which had persisted for about two years, had tarnished the state’s image.
According to him, a roundtable dialogue involving all parties to the dispute, as well as elder statesmen in the state, should be convened to address the root causes of the crisis.
“Mr President should step in and call the parties to order,” he said.
A former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, said only prayers and fasting could save Fubara from impeachment by the state House of Assembly.
Fayose spoke while appearing on Channels TV Politics Today programme on Friday.
He stressed that a sitting governor must understand the burden of leadership and learn to accommodate differing interests, including those who played key roles in his emergence.
“I’m not a prophet but I’m telling you, so many prayers, fasting and prayers will be the only thing that can save Fubara in this one (impeachment).
“My prayer is that God will enter his (Fubara) mind, the President will assist to calm him down, to remember the danger before him,” Fayose said.
Drawing from his own experience as a former governor who was impeached and later reinstated, Fayose said he was speaking from personal knowledge of how quickly political power could slip away.
The former governor accused Fubara of being ungrateful and unfair to Wike who brought him to power.
“Most of the things that are happening currently in Rivers State can never happen in Lagos State. Most recently, because Asiwaju (Tinubu) was not part of the decision to remove the Speaker (Obasa), we all saw what happened, without Asiwaju talking, the Speaker was restored.
“Ingratitude and being ungrateful will create so much headache for anyone. The emergency rule in Rivers State was a saving grace for Fubara because the moment you are impeached, that is your end,” Fayose said.
He advised Fubara to adopt a more conciliatory approach following his return from suspension, saying survival in politics sometimes requires retreat and careful management of relationships.
Meanwhile, Wike has called for greater unity and collaboration among political leaders in Rivers State to deliver more dividends of democracy to the people.
Wike made the call on Friday during his “Thank-you” visit to Andoni Local Government Area.
The FCT minister noted that major political parties in the state had united under what he described as a “Rainbow Coalition”.
He encouraged community leaders to continue working together in unity, urging them to present a united front to return Tinubu in 2027.
“We don’t have a party in Rivers State. What we have is the Rainbow Coalition under the Renewed Hope Family. I want all of you to continue to play that role you played in 2023 by making sure we continue to support Tinubu. There’s no negotiation about that,” Wike said.
Wike further stated that the local politics of the state would be discussed at a later time, noting, however, that the mistake made in 2023 would be corrected.
The impeachment process is the peak in the current face-off between the men, as Wike insists that the governor will not secure a second term even after defecting to the All Progressives Congress.
The allegations against Fubara and Odu are similar to those earlier levelled against them before the declaration of a state of emergency and their six-month suspension by Tinubu in March 2025.
Tinubu had mediated in the matter, after which Fubara and Wike agreed to a truce.
Barely three months after the end of the emergency rule, the two men started trading words.
Wike accused Fubara of reneging on their agreements, while Fubara made veiled jabs at his former boss.

The House, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had accused the governor of gross misconduct, including the demolition of the state assembly complex and spending without legislative approval, among other charges. The sitting was adjourned until January 15, 2026.
The Punch online reported that as at noon on Thursday, the House had not resumed plenary at its temporary accommodation, the conference hall of its official legislative quarters along Aba Road, Port Harcourt, andthere was no indication they would reconvene.
The news platform said there was no official explanation for the development nor a new date fixed or announced for resumption.
Mum was also the word from the House Chairman on Information, Petitions, and Complaints, Hon. Eneme George, as he was unavailable for clarification.

The contest is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent history, with several high-profile aspirants, emerging power blocs, and an increasingly vocal electorate weighing in on the state’s future leadership.
Seyi, 40, who is the son of President Bola Tinubu is being touted by several youth and diaspora groups as a potential contender for the Lagos State governorship.
Last year, there were endorsements from organisations such as the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, The Future Platform and segments of Nigerian communities in the diaspora who urged him to declare his interest in the race.
The development reportedly threw the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) into a dilemma, as Seyi has neither formally declared his ambition nor received any public endorsement or comment from his father on the matter.
By 2027, Lagos State is expected to have a new governor, as Babajide Sanwo-Olu would be completing his second and constitutionally permitted term in office.
However, there are feelers that the power brokers in the state are considering Ambode to return and complete his second tenure to pave way for Seyi Tinubu in 2031.
Recall that Ambode fell out with Tinubu and Lagos APC leaders ahead of the 2019 election and was denied the APC ticket, losing the party’s primary to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who went on to win the governorship poll.
Sources said the GAC members are now reportedly working to delay Seyi Tinubu’s governorship bid, moving it to 2031, citing a need for party continuity and strategic planning.
The source told our reporter that although Seyi Tinubu was interested earlier in the governorship race, he was advised to keep a low profile to concentrate on his father’s bid for a second term.
“The party leadership viewed his ambition as a potential distraction to his father’s second-term dream, given the growing opposition to the current government,” Segun Badejo, an APC chieftain in Gbagada, told our reporter.
The GAC, a powerful 30-member political body established by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State governor in 1999, led by Prince Tajudeen Olusi, comprises former governors and deputy governors, past speakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly, former and serving senators, as well as respected elder statesmen and women.
The GAC played a decisive role in the emergence of former governors Babatunde Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode, and later Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
According to a reliable insider, if President Tinubu is re-elected in 2027, he would complete his tenure by 2031, and to sustain his political legacy, Seyi Tinubu is expected to step into the Lagos governorship race by then.
Another source attributed the reason to the anger in the Epe district over the circumstances that led to Ambode’s ouster from office.
Administratively, Lagos State is divided into five districts, collectively referred to as IBILE: Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos Island and Epe.
Notably, past Lagos governors, Tinubu, Fashola and Sanwo-Olu, all hail from Lagos Island and completed their two terms, while only Ambode, from Epe, was denied a second term.
This has sparked discontent among stakeholders in Epe, who are unhappy with the manner in which their native son, Ambode, was removed from office.
Although Tinubu later rewarded Epe with the appointment of Tunji Alausa as Health Minister and later, Education Minister, the people are still demanding that the zone should be allowed to complete its term.
Stakeholders are claiming that Epe has been politically marginalised and insisted that either Alausa or Ambode should succeed the current Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027.
A senior APC stakeholder in Ogba, Ikeja, who requested anonymity while speaking with DAILY POS said, “The idea is not to sideline Seyi Tinubu but to ensure he has a more stable runway.
“The party does not want a repeat of what happened in 2023 when the Labour Party defeated Tinubu in the state.
“Seyi needs to concentrate and mobilize the youth front for his father.
“Going for governorship would divide attention and that would also lead to public outcry.
“You know Nigeria is a very funny country, they may not stand the father as a president and his son as a governor. Right now, the consensus is that Ambode or Alausa has a better chance of carrying the party in 2027,” the source added.
DAILY POST observed that the 2027 field is already crowded in Lagos, with heavyweights including Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the state assembly speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, Tokunbo Abiru and Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, among others, being touted for the number one seat.
A community leader, who identified himself as Olumide Balogun, told DAILY POST, “We have watched as other regions monopolised power. It’s time for Epe people to be heard. Either Tunji Alausa or Ambode should be our next governor.”
An observer, Edafe Oghenebrume, warned that if the Lagos APC fails to field a governorship candidate from the Lagos West Senatorial District, it would be a disaster.
He warned, “If Lagos APC fails to field a governorship candidate from Lagos West Senatorial district, there might be electoral challenges because since the emergence of democratic rule in 1999, West has been marginalized as regards the governorship seat.”
Meanwhile, only Jandor, a former PDP aspirant who defected to APC in October 2025, has publicly declared his ambition for the governorship.
“I believe Lagosians deserve a fresh vision, one that blends experience with innovation,” Jandor said in an interview with Channels Television.
“Having observed governance from both sides of the aisle, I am ready to offer solutions that reflect the people’s needs if I have a solid backing of Mr President and the party in Lagos State. It will be a walkover,” he added.
Public sentiment and voter perspective
Residents and electorate across Lagos have been closely watching the political maneuvering, with many expressing a mix of excitement, skepticism and cautious optimism.
A shop owner in Ikeja, Mrs Funke Adeyemi, said, “It doesn’t matter who the party chooses. What we want is someone who will bring development, improve our roads, and secure jobs. Lagosians are tired of promises without action.”
Another resident, Tunde Olanrewaju, emphasised continuity and stability.
“Ambode has governance experience, and Tinubu has political lineage. But we need practical policies, not just the spectacle of politics,” he said.
Younger voters appear keen to see a more inclusive process. A university student, Chidera Nwosu, said, “We need a leader who listens to ordinary people, not just party elders. The next governor must have a vision that goes beyond political calculations.”
The road to 2027
A political consultant familiar with the party’s strategy in Kirikiri Town, Taiwo Akorede stated, “The party must reconcile all interests while projecting a candidate capable of winning in a competitive general election.”
As Lagos gears up for the 2027 governorship election, the race is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched and fiercely contested in recent memory.
One thing is certain, the countdown to 2027 has begun, and Lagosians are watching closely.

Sources close to the governor revealed that although he had previously planned to meet with President Bola Tinubu in France, the trip was abruptly canceled. While some attributed this to “visa issues,” others speculated that the governor did not receive approval from the president to meet with him.
Governor Yusuf had earlier held a secret meeting with his political mentor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to address the growing tension over his planned defection to the APC. During this meeting, Yusuf reportedly assured Kwankwaso that he would delay any action until he had consulted with the president and discussed the terms of joining the APC.
As the pressure mounts and with the APC congress on the horizon, sources indicate that the governor may soon announce his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and formalize his defection to the APC.
On Tuesday, Governor Yusuf met with Abba Bichi, the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, to inform him of his intention to join the APC. On Wednesday, he also met with Nasir Ja’oji, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Citizenship and Leadership, to discuss his plans and arrange a meeting with the APC state chairman, Abdullahi Abbas.
Additionally, the governor has reportedly directed his spokesman to invite media representatives for a briefing in Abuja, further fueling speculation about his political future.
“Already the governor has invited his social media aides and a select group of local radio stations to Abuja for a major briefing. The agenda is still not clear. It may be a briefing after a council meeting or announcement on his new political direction,” a source privy to the directive told Daily Nigerian.
While the Kano APC stakeholders initially planned to register the governor as the first member of the APC on the e-registration portal, this plan was put on hold due to Yusuf’s indecision and repeated delays.
In response to this, the stakeholders decided to proceed with the registration without the governor, but sources indicate that Yusuf later contacted them, pleading for a postponement and reaffirming his commitment to joining the party.
The APC stakeholders have since suspended the e-registration indefinitely, awaiting the governor’s final decision.
