Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar kicks as police summon El-Rufai, accuses Tinubu of authoritarianism
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the police summoning of Nasir El-Rufai and leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna, including the brazen attack on former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, and the violent disruption of the Katsina Elders Forum meeting on security reforms.
In a statement, Atiku said the cases are not isolated incidents. “Instead, they signify a coordinated and dangerous assault on dissenting voices, civic freedoms, and the very essence of pluralistic democracy,” he said.

“It is important to emphasise that dissent is vital to democracy. Criminalising opposition, attacking reformist voices, and undermining peaceful civic engagement erode the foundations of our Republic. No government that resorts to intimidation and uses security agencies as weapons against perceived opponents can genuinely uphold democratic principles.”
Without a doubt, he said, Nigeria is dangerously close to slipping into authoritarian rule if these patterns of repression continue unabated. “We cannot afford to return to an era marked by fear, silence, and impunity.
“I urge all Nigerians, both statesmen and citizens, to recognise the urgency of this moment. Defending our democracy cannot be the sole responsibility of the opposition; it is a collective national duty. Power is transient, but history will harshly judge those who wield it against the people instead of in their service.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us, not just the ruling party or any single individual. We must not allow the principles of liberty, justice, and the rule of law to be undermined by partisan desperation.

President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Saturday for a three-nation visit to France, Kenya, and Rwanda. He will attend the Africa-France Summit in Nairobi (May 11-12), co-chaired by Presidents Macron and Ruto, focusing on energy transition, digital transformation, and climate action. He will then proceed to the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali (May 14-15), themed “Scale or Fail,” highlighting Nigeria’s investment reforms. The trip will last approximately two weeks.

The Presidency and opposition figure Peter Obi have traded words over the Federal Government’s borrowing profile. President Bola Tinubu had defended the administration’s borrowing, stating, “Borrowing is not leprosy.” Obi countered on X, saying: “Borrowing is not only leprosy, but a killer cancer when it is borrowed for consumption and not production.” Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga responded, accusing Obi of “demagoguery” and insisting the government borrows for infrastructure, not consumption.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged Nigerian workers to wield their collective voice and votes to demand competent leadership. In a Workers’ Day statement, Obi said workers must “refuse to reward failure, corruption, ethnic division, and bad governance.” He described workers as the “backbone of every nation” and said the current minimum wage of N70,000 can no longer guarantee a modest standard of living.
