Impeachment Saga: Rivers State Assembly Fails to Sit For Impeachment

A week after commencing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, the Rivers State House of Assembly did not resume plenary on Thursday as expected.

The House, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had accused the governor of gross misconduct, including the demolition of the state assembly complex and spending without legislative approval, among other charges. The sitting was adjourned until January 15, 2026.

The Punch online reported that as at noon on Thursday, the House had not resumed plenary at its temporary accommodation, the conference hall of its official legislative quarters along Aba Road, Port Harcourt, andthere was no indication they would reconvene.

The news platform said there was no official explanation for the development nor a new date fixed or announced for resumption.

Mum was also the word from the House Chairman on Information, Petitions, and Complaints, Hon. Eneme George, as he was unavailable for clarification.
