Rivers Assembly Fails To Resume Plenary After Impeachment Proceedings

Published

The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, has failed to resume plenary on Thursday, January 15, 2026, a week after adjourning its last sitting.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING

In its first sitting of 2026, held on January 8, the House initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, over allegations of gross misconduct.

The charges include the demolition of the state assembly complex, spending without legislative approval, and other related offences. The House had adjourned until January 15, 2026, to continue the proceedings.

However, by noon on Thursday, January 15, Punch visited the Assembly and found no indication that the session was set to reconvene.

The House, which currently holds sittings in the conference hall of its official legislative quarters along Aba Road, appeared inactive, and no official explanation or resumption date was provided.
Appeal From Assembly Members To Discontinue Impeachment

This delay follows an intervention from two additional members of the Assembly, Barile Nwakoh (representing Khana Constituency I) and Emilia Amadi (representing Obio/Akpor Constituency II), who, on Wednesday, appealed to their colleagues to conditionally discontinue the impeachment process.

In their appeal, the lawmakers acknowledged that both the governor and his deputy might have breached constitutional provisions, but they argued that appeals from respected leaders across the state should not be disregarded.

Their intervention came just two days after Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo (representing Omuma Constituency) and Peter Abbey (representing Degema Constituency) also urged the Assembly to temper justice with mercy in their handling of the impeachment proceedings.

As of Thursday afternoon, there has been no official statement from the Rivers State House of Assembly or its leadership regarding the delay in reconvening.
