NLC Spokesman Says N100,000 Minimum Wage Too Low, Workers Deserve N1 Million Monthly

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has described the proposed N100,000 national minimum wage being considered by state governors as unrealistic, arguing that Nigerian workers should earn as much as N1 million monthly, given current economic conditions. NLC spokesman Benson Upah cited rising inflation, naira depreciation, higher fuel prices and electricity tariffs, and the impact of new tax measures. He noted that government revenues have improved significantly, with over N5 trillion from Middle East windfalls, and should support enhanced wages.

Key Points:

A N1m monthly wage would dramatically increase government wage bills at all levels.
State governors may resist such a hike, citing fiscal sustainability concerns.
Workers’ purchasing power has collapsed under inflation, making current wages inadequate.
Improved FAAC allocations could fund increases, but states vary in revenue capacity.
The proposal sets up a tense negotiation between labour and government ahead of potential strikes.

The NGF has yet to formally present any wage proposal, leaving labour and government to resume negotiations amid rising economic pressures.
