Wike‑Backed PDP Urges Jonathan to Dissociate From 2027 Presidential Convention ‘Charade’

The Abdulrahman Mohammed‑led National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to publicly distance himself from a planned convention to ratify him as the party’s 2027 presidential candidate. The faction called Jonathan’s alleged candidacy a “charade” and noted no record of him expressing interest or purchasing nomination forms.

Meanwhile, the rival Tanimu Turaki‑led Interim NWC vowed to proceed with the convention at an Abuja event centre despite Wike’s warning to hotels against hosting unrecognised parties. INEC continues to recognise the Mohammed‑led NWC.

Key Points:

A public dissociation by Jonathan would weaken the Turaki faction’s legitimacy.
Wike’s warning to event centres signals state‑backed pressure against rival factions.
Voter confusion over the PDP’s true candidate may deepen ahead of 2027.
Judicial interventions have failed to resolve the PDP leadership crisis.
Jonathan’s silence continues to fuel speculation about his political ambitions.

The planned convention on May 30 will test whether the Turaki faction can proceed without Jonathan’s endorsement or official recognition.
