The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has filed an appeal against the Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja that set aside its earlier judgment directing INEC to register the party, according to The PUNCH.
Party leadership, including presidential candidate Peter Obi, national leader Seriake Dickson, and former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, held marathon emergency meetings over the weekend to finalise legal strategy. The court held that the earlier judgment was delivered without hearing all affected parties, particularly the Peace Movement Party, which claimed ownership of the disputed party logo.
The NDC’s National Secretary, Ikenna Enekweizu, confirmed the appeal would be filed on Monday, describing the ruling as unprecedented and lacking legal foundation.
Key Points:
NDC’s ballot access in 2027 now depends on appellate court outcome
Legal uncertainty may weaken opposition unity ahead of elections
The ruling tests Nigeria’s judicial independence and democratic process
Senior lawyers confirm NDC has constitutional right to appeal the decision
Timing of appeal is critical as INEC prepares for 2027 election cycle
The Court of Appeal’s decision will determine whether NDC candidates, including Obi and Kwankwaso, appear on the 2027 ballot. All eyes are on the appellate process.
