The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit seeking to compel INEC to recognise the Kabiru Turaki-led interim national working committee of the PDP, casting doubt on the faction’s nomination of former President Goodluck Jonathan for the 2027 presidential election.
Justice Salim Ibrahim upheld preliminary objections filed by INEC and the Wike-backed PDP faction, ruling that the plaintiffs lacked authority to institute the action in the party’s name.
The court granted joinder applications by the Wike faction and struck out PDP as a plaintiff. It also imposed N70 million costs against the plaintiffs and N10 million against their counsel. INEC’s website currently lists Abdulrahman Mohammed as the PDP national chairman.
Key Points:
Jonathan’s 2027 presidential ambition is now uncertain following the court ruling.
The PDP’s recognition of Wike’s leadership may now be firmly established.
Voters may face confusion over which PDP faction is legitimate.
The ruling reinforces INEC’s authority to recognise only duly elected party executives.
Timing of the judgment, ahead of 2027, may shape the PDP’s electoral preparations.
Whether the Turaki-led faction appeals the ruling and how INEC’s recognition of the Wike-led PDP affects the 2027 election landscape.
