Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu Resigns to Pursue Oyo Governorship Ambition

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has resigned from office, effective April 30, to focus on his gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State. In his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu, Adelabu said his aspiration dates back to 2016 and that he is stepping down in line with the amended Electoral Act.

He previously contested the Oyo governorship in 2019 and 2023, losing both times to incumbent Governor Seyi Makinde. Power supply remained poor under his watch, with frequent outages and grid collapses.

Key Points:

Adelabu’s resignation came about three weeks after the March 31 deadline for political appointees.
He apologised to Nigerians in March over persistent blackouts during scorching heat.
Adelabu rejoined the APC after the 2023 elections before his ministerial appointment.
He lost the 2019 and 2023 Oyo governorship elections.
His chances in the Oyo APC primary remain uncertain.

Adelabu now turns his full attention to a third attempt at becoming Oyo State governor.
