Ex-Head of State Abdulsalami Warns Fake news, Propaganda are Fueling Terrorism in Nigeria

Former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar has warned that political propaganda and fake news on social media are emboldening terrorist groups and worsening insecurity in Nigeria.

Speaking in a statement on his 84th birthday, he said the recent death of General Rabe Abubakar and many other victims of insecurity should serve as a wake-up call.

He called for greater national unity, adding, “The armed forces and all other security agencies have been very strong in the fight against terrorism. But this is not their fight alone.”

Key Points:

Fake news and propaganda are giving terrorists the attention and legitimacy they crave.
The politicisation of security issues has weakened the collective fight against terrorism.
Every Nigerian citizen has a stake in the fight against insecurity.

The success of one terrorist group encourages another, a vicious cycle that must be broken.
Security agencies must remain resolute, but citizens must also stay vigilant and law-abiding.

Abdulsalami’s plea for unity and vigilance is a reminder that the fight against terrorism requires collective effort. The media must also act responsibly in reporting security issues.
