The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has alleged that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai violated the conditions of a court-approved medical visit while in custody, leading to the arrest of his personal physician, Prof Bello Abubakar.
The ICPC said El-Rufai declined to appear in court on July 6, insisting on seeing his personal doctor despite indicating he had no immediate medical complaints when examined by the commission’s doctor.
The commission alleged that during the medical visit, photographs surfaced showing El-Rufai with visitors, suggesting the visit was used for activities outside the medical scope.
The ICPC described this as a “clear violation of the court order.” El-Rufai’s wife, Asia, appealed to President Tinubu for fair treatment, saying the family is traumatised. The Kaduna State High Court adjourned the case to July 15.
Key Points:
The ICPC’s action against El-Rufai’s physician signals a hardline approach to the case
The allegations of abuse of a medical visit could strengthen the prosecution’s case
El-Rufai’s family claims he is being denied basic human rights
The trial has become politically charged, with the ADC accusing the government of persecution
The case tests the boundaries of constitutional rights for those in custody
The case has been adjourned to July 15. El-Rufai remains in custody while the ICPC continues its investigation. The family’s appeal to the President adds political pressure.
