AFCON: ‘We can go through that door’ – Chelle explains how Super Eagles’ plan to beat Algeria
Nigeria coach, Eric Chelle, has explained what the Super Eagles need to do to win against Algeria in the quarterfinal match at Marrakech Stadium on Saturday.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
Going into the quarterfinals, Nigeria has done really well in the tournament, winning four matches, scoring twelve goals, and letting in just four goals.
Algeria too have won every game they have played and only let in one goal.
On Friday during his press conference, the Malian coach said that for the Super Eagles to win the important quarterfinal game, they need to score more goals than the other team.
He said, “To win the game, we need to score some goals. We look at the game and look for the opponent’s weaknesses.
“We tell our team that we can go through that door. This is the same every time, the same, and the coach of Algeria, this is the same.
“Of course, we focus on Algeria’s weaknesses, but this is the quarterfinals, which is a major competition. So, your mental state and mindset are really important because you have to handle the pressure, deal with the opponent, and follow your coach’s instructions.
“We try to put in effort every day and during every training session. That’s why I always mention the training session every time I talk about it.”
If Nigeria beat Algeria on Saturday, many would think it is a revenge since the Desert Warriors beat the Super Eagles in the semifinals in 2019 AFCON in Egypt.

Wayne Rooney Named Richest Football Manager In The World, Pep Guardiola Third
Football managers earn vast sums both during and after their careers, but only a select few have built truly enormous fortunes.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
Based on estimated earnings, contracts and business ventures, these are the 10 richest football managers in the world in 2026.
Topping the list is Wayne Rooney, whose wealth was largely accumulated during his legendary playing career at Manchester United.
Despite struggling in management and being sacked by Plymouth Argyle in late 2024, Rooney’s estimated net worth stands at a staggering £170million.
Atlético Madrid boss Diego Simeone follows in second place, boosted by his status as the highest-paid manager in world football.
Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola are tied in third, both estimated to be worth around £100million, reports Planet Football.
While Guardiola continues to earn huge sums at Manchester City, Mourinho has famously banked massive compensation packages from multiple sackings.
Zinedine Zidane, Steven Gerrard and Sir Alex Ferguson also feature prominently, having combined elite coaching salaries with lucrative playing careers.
Carlo Ancelotti, Jurgen Klopp and Arsene Wenger round out the top 10, proving longevity at the top pays handsomely.
Pep Guardiola Only Third As Rooney Tops The List
Guardiola’s position may surprise many, given his dominance with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City.
However, Rooney’s peak Premier League wages, endorsements and post-retirement income place him comfortably ahead.
Simeone’s £25.9million annual salary at Atlético Madrid has propelled him above most of his rivals.
Meanwhile, Klopp and Wenger remain among football’s wealthiest figures despite stepping away from day-to-day club management.
With rising salaries and new global roles emerging, this list could look very different again by 2027.

Nigeria–Morocco: Referee Daniel Laryea’s performance looked like he was told what to do – Ghanaian claims
A Ghanaian social media commentator, Bongo Ideas, has sparked fresh debate after criticising the referee who officiated the tense match between Nigeria and host nation Morocco.....TAP TO CONTINUE READING
The centre referee, Daniel Laryea, came under heavy scrutiny following the just concluded encounter, which ended Nigeria’s campaign and favoured the host country.
Claims of biased officiating
In a Facebook post that quickly gained attention, Bongo Ideas alleged that Daniel Laryea’s performance appeared influenced before the match even began.
He wrote:
“— gave cheap fouls to Morocco
— gave Nigerian players (Calvin Bassey) unnecessary yellow
— never gave Morocco players a yellow
— didn’t allow the game to freely flow
— was under immense pressure
— penalty or not Daniel Laryea had a 4/10 game
— AFCON is rigged for host nations to win!
I’m a Ghanaian and also a Ga buh let’s call a spade a spade…that performance from Daniel Laryea felt and looked like he was told what to do on the field before he stepped out. He let Ghana down!”
Nigerians react online
The post generated widespread reactions, with many Nigerians sharing mixed views on the referee’s conduct and the match outcome.
Gold wrote: “I’m a Nigerian but It’s football and the host Nation deserves to get to the finals, Morocco has invested a lot, if it’s easy to be a Host Nation Other African Countries should step and do better.
“Did you see world class stadiums they have?. I don’t know how CAF managed to buy the ref or however it was done, kudos to Morocco they fought hard.”
Rahman wrote: “They should never blame the referee for any reason… Playing 90min + Injury time + 30min extra time with only 2 shots on target…. Do they want the Referee to play the penalty for them?…👆😂😂😂”
More divided opinions
Other commenters dismissed claims of bias and urged Nigerians to accept the result.
BestBoi wrote: “Masa no blame referee, Make Nigeria accept defeat and move on 😂😂😂”
Agulu said: “Who can a Ghanaian even officiate a game in which Nigeria is involved? Definitely obvious.”
Stanley wrote: “Sometimes you no dey make sense one bit but we dey manage am. You refer to an extra time plus penalty shootout match as rigged?”
The debate continues online, with football fans across Africa sharply divided over the referee’s performance and the influence of host nations in major tournaments.

So far, only the last-16 clash between Mali and Tunisia was decided via spot-kicks at the tournament.
Nigeria lost by penalties to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 2026 World Cup intercontinental playoff in November.
And when asked about his team’s preparations for a shoot-out in case the match against the Atlas Lions extends beyond extra-time, Chelle replied: “I will go to the mosque to pray to win if we get to a penalty shootout.”
If the Eagles are able to beat the host whether in regulation time or penalties, they will take on Senegal or Egypt in Sunday’s final.
