BREAKING NEWS: EFCC Under Intense Fire Over Killing of 16‑Year‑Old Suspect in Makurdi

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is facing intense public scrutiny over the death of 16‑year‑old Sesugh Atser, allegedly killed by operatives in Makurdi, Benue State, in May 2026. The EFCC claimed Sesugh escaped from custody on May 4 after breaking through a toilet roof, and that on May 21, operatives traced him to a hideout where he and suspected cult members opened fire, prompting operatives to return fire. The victim’s mother rejected the account, saying her son was on bail and not in custody, and that he was chased and shot at close range. The EFCC has not released the body.

Key Points:

A 16‑year‑old boy is dead, leaving a family shattered; the body has not been released.
The EFCC’s escape narrative has been widely doubted, eroding public trust in the agency.
The incident adds to a pattern of alleged EFCC high‑handedness, including recent raids that sparked protests.
The mother’s account suggests excessive force against a minor who was not posing an immediate threat.
Without an independent investigation, allegations of extrajudicial killing will persist.

Calls for an independent probe are growing; the EFCC has not yet responded to the family’s demands for the release of the body.
