Nigerian pro soccer player Michael Eneramo died on the pitch after collapsing during a game on Friday, according to the Nigeria Football Federation. He was 40.

Eneramo was playing in a friendly in Kaduna when he collapsed, according to the release. He played the entire first half and the first five minutes of the second half before he appeared to suffer cardiac arrest.

“This is devastating. I am short of words at this moment. I can only pray that God will grant him eternal rest and also grant his loved ones and the Nigeria football family the fortitude to bear the loss,” NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi said.

Michael Eneramo appeared in 10 games for the Nigeria national team in his career, scoring three goals.

He also played professionally for teams in Tunisia and Turkey.

“We have learned with profound sorrow of the passing of our former footballer Michael Eneramo,” Sivasspor, a Turkish team, posted on X. “He will always be remembered for the battles he fought under our red-and-white jersey.

“May our late player find mercy from God; we extend our condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Galatasaray, another Turkish team, also remembered Eneramo on X.

“We are saddened to hear the passing of Michael Eneramo who played for multiple clubs in Turkish Süper Lig,” the post said. “Everyone at Galatasaray SK extends their condolences to his family, friends and the federation of Nigeria.”

Galatasaray striker, Victor Osimhen, failed to inspire the team on his comeback from injury, as they lost 2-0 to Genclerbirligi in the Turkish Cup quarter-final on Wednesday.

Osimhen has been out of action for over one month, after he injured his arm against Liverpool in the Champions League.

Galatasaray were heavy favourites going into the game, having defeated the in the the Super Lig last weekend.

The Yellow and Reds dominated the game, but failed to find the back of the net.

The visitors took the lead in the 51st minute through Firatcan Uzum.

Okan Buruk brought Osimhen on in the 78th minute, as Gala fought for a way back in the tie.

But five minutes after Osimhen’s introduction, Genclerbirligi scored their second through Adama Traore.
