PETITION FOR URGENT LEGISLATIVE INTERVENTION, HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE AND REINTEGRATION OF ANAMBRA INDIGENES RETURNED FROM SOUTH AFRICA

Dear Honourable Member,
RE: URGENT PETITION ON ANAMBRA INDIGENES RETURNED FROM SOUTH AFRICA AND STRANDED WITHOUT ADEQUATE SUPPORT
I respectfully bring before the Honourable House the urgent humanitarian situation of Anambra indigenes recently returned from the Republic of South Africa, some of whom have reportedly remained stranded and without adequate accommodation, feeding, transportation or means of livelihood for over one month.
Importantly, some of the affected returnees are indigenes of Onitsha, within the constituency you represent, making your intervention particularly significant in ensuring that these citizens are not left without assistance after returning home.
These are our brothers and sisters who have returned to Anambra under difficult circumstances. They urgently require government attention, humanitarian assistance and a structured pathway back into productive society.
OUR REQUEST
We respectfully appeal to the House Committee on Public Petitions to:
1. Urgently summon or invite relevant government agencies and stakeholders to brief the Committee on the circumstances and present condition of the returnees.
2. Ascertain the number, identity and immediate needs of the affected persons, particularly those currently without accommodation, feeding, transportation and other basic necessities.
3. Urge the Anambra State Government to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to prevent further hardship and vulnerability.
4. Facilitate an official reception and engagement between the returnees and the Anambra State Government.
5. Advocate a structured reintegration and empowerment programme, including skills acquisition, employment opportunities, entrepreneurship support, grants or soft loans and other sustainable livelihood initiatives.
6. Coordinate with relevant Federal agencies, local governments, community organisations and humanitarian bodies to ensure that the returnees receive comprehensive and sustainable support.
7. Where necessary, invite representatives of the returnees or their advocates to appear before the Committee and present their experiences and needs.
AN APPEAL FOR URGENT ACTION
Honourable Member, this matter is fundamentally about human dignity, compassion and the responsibility of government towards citizens in vulnerable circumstances.
Our people have returned home; they should not remain stranded for weeks without knowing where their next meal, accommodation or means of livelihood will come from.
We therefore respectfully appeal to you, as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Public Petitions, to use your good offices to secure urgent legislative and governmental attention to this matter.
Your intervention can help establish the facts, provide immediate relief and open the way for a meaningful and sustainable reintegration programme for these Ndi Anambra.
We remain available to provide the names, locations, documentation and other relevant information concerning the affected returnees whenever required.
