President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions and the recruitment of 28,000 additional military personnel, with four new divisional headquarters established in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo and Benin City.
The Presidency said the move is designed to decentralise command, strengthen border security and improve response times to emerging threats nationwide.
Under the new structure, divisions will cover all 36 states, with 1 Division in Kaduna, 2 Division in Ibadan, 3 Division in Jos, 81 Division in Lagos, 82 Division in Enugu, and 83 Division in Benin City, among others. Implementation will proceed in two phases, with the first phase to be completed by September 2026 and the second by December 2026.
