The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) to Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and directed Commissioners of Police nationwide to commence coordinated inter-state security operations aimed at tackling cross-border crimes.
A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, said the new security measures, which take effect from June 15, 2026, were announced during the monthly conference of strategic senior officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Under the directive, DIGs will provide strategic leadership and closer supervision of policing operations within their assigned zones, working alongside Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police to strengthen security coordination and improve response to emerging threats in the country.
To further enhance crime-fighting efforts, the IGP unveiled a nationwide initiative tagged “Handshake Patrols,” requiring neighbouring state commands to conduct joint patrols, share intelligence, and coordinate operations against criminals who exploit state boundaries to evade arrest.
Disu noted that many offenders commit crimes in one state and escape into another, making stronger inter-state collaboration essential for effective policing.
He therefore charged the Commissioners of Police to sustain regular engagement with neighbouring commands, intensify patrols along major entry and exit routes, and adopt a regional approach in addressing security challenges.
The IGP reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to intelligence-led policing, strategic coordination, and inter-agency collaboration to safeguard lives and property across the country.
