Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Yet to Receive N873.78bn Budget for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that it is yet to receive budgetary allocations for the conduct of the 2027 general elections. National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna disclosed this at a cross-sectoral interactive session in Abuja. INEC had proposed a total budget of N873.78 billion for the elections.

Haruna said the commission was making arrangements for the procurement of new BVAS devices to replace those damaged, lost, or unrecovered. He noted that the delay was still within the time limit set by the Electoral Act, 2026.

Key Points:

INEC’s N873.78bn budget for the 2027 elections has not been released.
The commission needs to procure new BVAS devices and other materials.
The Electoral Act allows funds to be released up to six months before elections.
The commission plans to conduct mock presidential election exercises to test technology.
Stakeholders warn that delayed funding could lead to procurement shortcuts and corruption.

INEC is awaiting funds to begin critical procurement. Stakeholders are urging the government to release funds early to avoid last-minute challenges.
