According to a report by Punch, on Thursday July 2, 2026, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that he is unable to provide detailed information about the Asaba Massacre despite serving as a military officer during Nigeria’s civil war.
Obasanjo made the statement in Abeokuta while receiving historical materials, books, videos, and eyewitness accounts relating to the Asaba Massacre and other civil war events.
The former president acknowledged his involvement in the civil war but explained that he was not in a position to give a full account of what happened in Asaba, he noted that although he participated in military operations during the conflict, he did not have direct knowledge of all the events surrounding the massacre.
