The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has issued a 21‑day ultimatum to the federal government over unpaid allowances, salary arrears, delayed training funds, and worsening welfare concerns. In a communique after its ordinary general meeting in Kano, NARD warned it cannot guarantee industrial harmony if the issues remain unresolved.
The association also demanded the release of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), payment of promotion arrears, and the establishment of a national protocol to prevent assaults on healthcare workers.
Key Points:
A nationwide strike by resident doctors would cripple tertiary healthcare services across Nigeria.
Unpaid allowances and arrears worsen brain drain as doctors seek better conditions abroad.
Assaults on doctors while on duty remain unaddressed, endangering healthcare workers’ safety.
Delayed recruitment due to Federal Character Commission compliance letters exacerbates manpower shortages.
A 21‑day window gives the government a short grace period to act before industrial action.
The government must urgently address NARD’s demands within 21 days to avoid a potentially crippling healthcare strike.
