Ghana, Nigeria, Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe Repatriate Citizens From South Africa Over Xenophobic Attacks

At least five African countries – Ghana, Nigeria, Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe – have repatriated or are repatriating citizens from South Africa following deadly xenophobic attacks. Ghana evacuated about 1,000 citizens; Mozambique brought back 700 after five nationals were killed; Malawi received 171; Zimbabwe evacuated 139; and Nigeria is bringing home over 1,000, with the first batch arriving Thursday. At least 12 African immigrants have been killed in the recent violence. South African President Ramaphosa has condemned the attacks but focused on illegal migration as a root cause.

Key Points:

Repatriation protects citizens from violence but disrupts livelihoods and families.
Diplomatic tensions between South Africa and other African nations have intensified.
Nigeria is considering retaliatory measures against South Africa.
The violence undermines Pan-African ideals of unity and solidarity.
Ramaphosa plans to send envoys to address the root causes of migration.

More repatriations are expected as Nigeria begins its evacuation; African governments continue to demand protection for their citizens in South Africa.
